I have tried to get my emails and this error keeps coming up saying: Folder
could not be displayed
Windows Mail could not open this folder.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Possible causes are:

Low disk space.

Low memory.

And I know I got enough memory because I have 112 GB of space free of 147
GB so I know I got the memory. So can any one help me please?

Will I be able to save my email address book and some of my emails from
Windows Mail or will I lose it when I update to Windows Live Mail?

See http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil
Try to Reset and Compact the database.

You won't lose a thing.
Everything will be imported automatically.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.

I had already tried using WMUtil and the esentutl command to fix the DB. In
both cases, the utility claimed it had repaired the database, but when I ran
Windows Mail, it claimed that an external program had corrupted the database,
and proceeded to "fix" it, leaving me again with the same errors everyone
else has reported.

So, I tried this fix (deleting both copies of the DB). Now I get the
following set of errors when I launch Windows Mail:

"Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the
Windows Mail message store. Windows Mail was unable to locate its message
database. If you've moved the database files to a new location, click OK to
reset the database path to that location. Otherwise, click Cancel to proceed,
any existing messages found will be available under Orphaned Accounts
(0x00000000, 2)"

I clicked Cancel, resulting in the following message:

"Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the
Windows Mail message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk
is full. (0x80070002, 2)"

Of course, I'm not out of memory (about 400MB free out of 1GB), nor out of
disk (over 116GB free out of 160GB). So I click OK, and get the final error
message:

"Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized."

And Windows Mail does not come up. So, what the heck do I do now? I do have
the old DB files saved off if they're needed for anything.

Move all the contents of the message store to another directory so that
WinMail starts fresh. Then you can import the messages from the moved
store. See also www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 which could be contributing to
the issue.

I have the same problem as tiger. I want to try your fix but I don't
understand how to move the contents of the message store to another
directory. I checked your link but it doesn't say how...can you help?
THANKS!!!!!! What do you think of Gary's solution to upgrade to Windows Live
Mail?

Use Windows Explorer to move
C:\Users\<Your Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders
to your Documents folder.

There is a more detailed step-by-step version of Steve's
procedure here:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
Go to the paragraph labeled "To Reset Windows Mail : (All Folders)"

Note: It's a lot of work if you have many custom folders or much
saved mail. I think you'd be better off just switching to WLM.

Thanks. I am no expert but I know my way around a computer - at least I did
until Vista. I cannot FIND "AppData" within my C:\Users\Jenny. I found this
to be the case the other day when I tried running cmd and then esentutl /p
"%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail\windowsmail.msmessagestore"
- I got an error to source database and failed with Jet error -1022...What am
I doing wrong?!?!?!?

Thank you...is there any way to tell if the problem is really within the
e-mail account or if it is because Windows Mail is not compatible with
McAfee?

You need to fix your Windows settings so that files with the
"hidden" attribute can be seen in Explorer.
Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View , and
select "Show hidden files and folders."

McAfee is the root cause, but once the damage is done,
even uninstalling McAfee often does not repair the damage.
It certainly doesn't hurt anything to uninstall McAfee on a
trial basis.
