however, on my C drive there is 13 GB free space out of 57 GB. I have also
deleted emails from inbox and sent. thanks for your answers

My PERSONAL experience with this issue was that I was Vista (pre-SP1) Mail
was stuck in Outbox. Mail could not be deleted.
Attempt to display message resulted in same thing you were seeing.

I applied KB941090, and then rebooted Vista, and that problem went away...
Deletion was now possible...
But I still had other Windows Mail problems. I am now looking at Windows
Live Mail

If any messages can't be deleted, apply this Microsoft fix:

Although that article only mentions Outbox, it works for all mail folders.
