I NEED EXPERT HELP..I HAVE PROBLEM WITH 'MY COMPUTER'

OK I have a strange problem that I started experiencing
yesterday. I am going to list a bunch of scenarios that I
have observed which I think are all interrelated:

1) When I open My Computer (or Windows Explorer) by double
clicking its icon on my Desktop, the My Computer window
opens but a moving flashlight appears in the middle. On
the status bar it says "Searching for items..." It takes
about 2 to 3 minutes or so before the disk drives (Drive
A, C, D) and My Documents folder and Shared Folder
appear. This is unacceptable and it has been happening
since yesterday. When I close the window and open My
Computer again, same results 2 to 3 minute delay before I
can access any files. I've tried rebooting, defragging,
restarting, and turning my PC on and off.

2) I am running Microsoft Word. I have just finished
typing a new document. I am saving my file for the first
time so I click on File>Save As.. This brings up
the 'Save As' window. I type the file name and click on
the drop down list. Microsoft Word then freezes for again
about 2 to 3 minutes before it gives me the contents of
the drop down list which again contains the disk drives,
My Documents, Shared Folder, and other items (during this
time i can switch to other open windows but Microsoft Word
is totally frozen)

3) I am running Internet Explorer. I click on a link to
download a file. This brings up the 'File Download'
window. I click on 'Save'. This brings up the 'Save As'
window. I double click the 'My Computer' icon from the
list in the middle box. Guess what? Moving flashlight
appears and I again have to wait 2 to 3 minutes before I
can open up the folder to where I want to save my file.
Now I have a high speed cable connection but there is no
point waiting 2 or 3 minutes before I start downloading
something.

My conclusion: For some reason whenever I try to access
the different drives that I have in my PC Windows takes
too long to load those drives. It doesn't matter what
program I'm running, whenever I try to access the list or
if i click My Computer from any dialog box, it takes to
long to load but it does eventually load after 2 or 3
minutes.

PLEASE HELP me if you have the solution to this problem.
I do not want to have to reformat my hard drive and
reinstall Windows again!

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1 Version 2002
CPU: Pentium 4 1.8 GHZ
Memory: 512 RAM
PC is virus/spyware-free
Sygate Personal Firewall is installed
Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0.0 is installed

Nope it doesn't solve the problem. I've had Mcafee
VirusScan installed and running (On-Access Scan enable)
for 2 months now. I started experience this problem just
a day or 2 ago.

Here's another scenario that I just experienced. When I
right-click on any file and choose 'Send To' from the pop-
up menu my screen just freezes for 4 minutes before the
sub-menu appears. If you repeat the process, the same
thing happens. Do you see a pattern here?

I disabled my floppy drive and my CD-ROM drives and it
doesn't fix the problem. I don't think its a good idea to
disable my only hard disk drive (Maxtor). I have no other
drives besides those three.

Remove CD or DVD from the drive carrier. Then try again.

Thanks so much! I downloaded and ran the registry fix from
the "Registry Edits for Windows XP" website (line 157
column 2), registry my computer and BAM! problem
solved..no more delay when opening My Computer/Windows
Explorer. It also solved other numberous problems such as
slow loading of programs that require access to My
Computer/Windows explore. Thanks a million! You are an
expert.

Hi,

Run the edit on line 157
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Other than that, this can be caused by Windows updates: Update 817287
and/or 821557. Also, this type of behavior can be caused by Xupiter and
Hotbar, to name a few. Start here, if the above doesn't help nor apply:

Hijack This
