NASTY LOADING PROBLEM/Screen Freezing Up

OK I have a strange problem that I started experiencing
yesterday. I am going to list a bunch of scenarios that I
have observed which I think are all interrelated:

1) When I open My Computer (or Windows Explorer) by double
clicking its icon on my Desktop, the My Computer window
opens but a moving flashlight appears in the middle. On
the status bar it says "Searching for items..." It takes
about 2 to 3 minutes or so before the disk drives (Drive
A, C, D) and My Documents folder and Shared Folder
appear. This is unacceptable and it has been happening
since yesterday. When I close the window and open My
Computer again, same results 2 to 3 minute delay before I
can access any files. I've tried rebooting, defragging,
restarting, and turning my PC on and off.

2) I am running Microsoft Word. I have just finished
typing a new document. I am saving my file for the first
time so I click on File>Save As.. This brings up
the 'Save As' window. I type the file name and click on
the drop down list. Microsoft Word then freezes for again
about 2 to 3 minutes before it gives me the contents of
the drop down list which again contains the disk drives,
My Documents, Shared Folder, and other items (during this
time I can switch to other open windows but Microsoft Word
is totally frozen)

3) I am running Internet Explorer. I click on a link to
download a file. This brings up the 'File Download'
window. I click on 'Save'. This brings up the 'Save As'
window. I double click the 'My Computer' icon from the
list in the middle box. Guess what? Moving flashlight
appears and I again have to wait 2 to 3 minutes before I
can open up the folder to where I want to save my file.
Now I have a high speed cable connection but there is no
point waiting 2 or 3 minutes before I start downloading
something.

4)When I right-click on any file and choose 'Send To' from
the pop-up menu my screen just freezes for 4 minutes
before the sub-menu appears. If you repeat the process, the
same thing happens. Do you see a pattern here?

My conclusion: For some reason whenever I try to access
the different drives that I have in my PC Windows takes
too long to load those drives. It doesn't matter what
program I'm running, whenever I try to access the list or
if I click My Computer from any dialog box, it takes to
long to load but it does eventually load after 2 or 3
minutes.

PLEASE HELP me if you have the solution to this problem.
I do not want to have to reformat my hard drive and
reinstall Windows again! I've tried disabling my
antivirus program, disabling my floppy and cd-rom drives
from Device Manager to no avail.

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1 Version 2002

.
try the system file checker tool. Click start, run, and
type in this here; "sfc /scannow" with that space after
the sfc. It will ask for your XP CD to copy any needed
files from, if you do not have one, borrow a XP CD. This
will run as Windows file protection, and is safe to use.
