I lost my Laptop with a licensed XP in it, can I keep my license and use in another laptop?

I am not sure if my question should be put in here or have already been answered...

Recently I lost my Laptop (got stolen) and I have a licensed Windows XP in it. Can I keep my license and use in another laptop or desktop? Can I prevent the thief from using my license? how can I do it?

As long as Windows XP is installed on your stolen laptop, you cannot
use the same license to install it on another computer. Since you have
no way of knowing the status of XP on that laptop, you are just plain
out of luck and need to purchase a new copy.

As far as I know a copy that comes with hardware is supposed to be
non-transferable. Microsoft may have changed their licensing. You would have
to read the license real carefully or just email Microsoft. If you know the
key for your laptop you could probably contact them and maybe they could
deny reactivation. However with a laptop you don't normally make the
hardware changes that cause a reactivation to happen?

You paid for it it is yours.
How do you stop someone listening to audio cds on a stolen cd player?
Do you still have the CDRom? if so install it on your new laptop and phone
up Microsoft to get it activated. The person who stole your laptop is using
it illegally as he never activated it or registered it. And there is no way
you can stop him using it.

Reply: Not anymore. If your purse containing $50 was stolen,
you no longer have the $50. Can you go to a bank and
ask them to replace the stolen $50?

Yes, but if you still have the origonal install disk, assuming its not an
OEM copy, the Act of theft by someone invalidates any licience that may have
been given
I doubt MS could enforce anything on the origonal owner if they install on a
new pc - of course when you try and activate it you may get a different
response from MS, but I doubt it carries the weight of law, certainly it
would'nt in the UK

If the laptop was stolen and the crime reported to the police and you are going
to report it to your insurance company -- make sure you include the cost of any
programs you added to the system after purchase. If you bought it wiht XP on
it, then the $$ of XP is included in the cost of the system. If you upgraded to
XP, add that cost

You cna not prevent the thief from using your license .... just as you were
unable to prevent him/her from stealing your laptop.

The way I see it is that if you have the disk and the key code then you own
the product, go ahead and install and activate it on your computer, who is
going to question it.

Be aware that Microsoft has no way to know if the OS was
uninstalled on the other laptop or not. Assuming you have a retail
copy of WinXP and you have the installation CD, you are bound
only by your ethics.

Greetings --

If it was an OEM license, it was stolen along with the laptop.
OEM licenses are _not_ transferable to other computers under any
circumstances. Make sure that your insurance claim reflects the full
extent of your loss.

Remember. Corporations hire lots of high prices lawyers to insure
thier policies fall within legal guidelines.
