validation failure after installing sp3

Hi
I recently downloaded and installed sp3. I now have star in my task
bar telling me that I may not have a genuine windows license and that
there has been a "validation failure". As it happens my XP license is
genuine and came with my IBM R50e Think Pad laptop. How do I get rid
of this star thing in my laptop? Should I install the WGA installexe
plug in? I have been told that service packs are just a way for
Microsoft to spy on people and I am worried this is the case now. Also
it is not allowing my desk top screen saver.....

Many thanks for any help

Then aside from a minor inconvenience, there's no problem. At worst, you
have to make a five-minute toll-free phone call.

Yes, and then follow its directions. At most, you'll need to phone in;
there will be a dialog that allows you to specify your area, gives you a
number to call, and displays a number you read to whoever is on the other
end of the line. They read a number back to you. If you speak clearly and
politely you're done in a few minutes.

Oh please. You really shouldn't believe everything you hear.

Service packs are produced for all operating systems and software that is in
use.

If they aren't being produced, it's because nobody uses the product.
Also it is not allowing my desk top screen saver.....

To do what? If validation fails, this may block some features.
Many thanks for any help

Did you install SP3 via Windows Update, or did you download the full
installer and install from that? I personally find the second approach
more reliable.
