Timing changes after installing SP3

I installed SP3 in the usual way -- I said "okay" when asked if I wanted to
install SP3. I now have Windows version 5.1 (build
2600.xpsp_sp3_qdr.080814+1236 : Service Pack 3) on two different machines.
One problem I have is that I can no longer readily use files residing on my
other computer. If I click on a file on disk Z (which is My Documents on my
laptop) Word starts up loading that file and 30 minutes later is still
showing the hourglass. Eventually it does load it but the same happens when
I want to save that file back to disk Z. It completely ties up my machine so
I can't do anything until it completes the writing some 20-39 mins later.

Another related but intermittent problem is when I launch an application,
such as Windows Explorer, it opens very quickly but will not allow me to do
anything in that window for about 15-30 seconds. I can't even select
anything during that time. Does SP3 have virus tests that lock up the
computer in these cases?

Regarding the first problem, have you tried mapping a new drive for My
Documents?

Regarding problem two, no SP3 does not have a virus test. Unless someone
provides a specific fix, I would start with this technique:

I just tried remappiing to Y: but it did the same thing -- it took over 3
minutes to launch a file from Y: into Word (by double clicking the file name
in Y:) and even then I was locked out from doing anything in that window for
another few minutes. After that I moved the window because it was behind
some other windows and it left the formerly occupied space blank for another
3 minutes. The top window margin said "MS Word ... not responding" and the
bottom window margin said "running virus scan" but it has always said that
and the scan only took a few seconds.

I have not booted in safe mode to test wherther some other program is
causing the delay. I should also say that the "freezing out" of a launched
window does not just occur when working on a file from another machine, it
sometimes happens when I open a file from the same machine, for example using
Windows Explorer. The window launches quickly but then does not allow me to
select a file displayed in the window for a long time (not 3 minutes but
maybe 30-40 seconds)

Between when this was not happening and now I have installed SP3 and also a
"register cleaning" program called RegCure which may also have done something
strange to my registry since a number of things did not work properly until I
rebooted the machine about 3 times.

Thanks for your help.
