Hi,

I bought XP professional earlier this year and installed it in office
laptop. Now I want to move the license to my home desktop since I have to
return my office laptop back. Is there an url which explains the steps.

Thanks in advance

How do I "deactivate", move to another computer, or sell
a previously activated XP?

Thnx Carey.

Step 1 in the procedure requires XP to be removed from the current location
by formatting. Is there a way to avoid this ? (Dont want to return the
laptop without any OS). I do have a corporate XP license key. Is it possible
to put that key into the laptop and move current key to my home desktop ?

No, you'll have to reformat the drive before installing
XP on your other PC.

Yes, if you bought Windows Retail version then you are allowed to use it on your replacement computer. You can read everything here:

Despite what most vulagar professionals (MVPs) might say, you don't have to uninstall from the first machine because it might have been broken or even stolen. So how can you uninstall it? Stupid suggestions by vulgar professionals.

Incidentally, I have found that if you use pirated copy of Microsoft software then activation is not a problem. Microsoft has deliberately targetted innocent, law abiding users of its products. They say, activation is to stop casual copying of its software by home users!!

Hope this proves useful.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

You can use Symantec GHOST to backup the laptop onto 3 or 4 CDs, and restore
it to your desktop. And you don't need to ask about the license, just put
the COA onto your computer. I told you this secretly.

Not that it would work, anyways.

Thanks. I didnt have to format my first computer at all. But I had to call
the activation center to get the key for the 2nd computer..wouldnt do it via
internet. Either way I would be formatting the first computer before
returning it.
