Hi,

I was using the Laptop at work (It was mine prior to working there) and the
XP user name was my employeres network and it was a simple password.

I left working for that company and changed the user name and password and
did not write them down. I contacted my ex employer but the log in details
no longer worked (as I changed them).

I have tried re-installing XP but it is not happening becasue the cable
between my laptop and my CD drive is faulty (I am using a Dell Latitiude).

Any ideas on how I can get into my system?

Have you tried logging in using the built-in administrator account (you need
to use Safe Mode for this if you have XP Home) ? The password may be blank
(it is by default in Home).

I'd definitely recommend you fix your hardware problems, regardless. You
need to be able to boot from a CD. There are password reset utilities if you
need them, but you will be much better off if you can use them from a
bootable CD.

Hi, Geoffrey. The new login and password would never have worked anyway
because your computer was no longer connecting to your old job's domain.
The best thing for you to do - if the computer is fairly new and worth
repairing - is to fix the CD drive. Contact Dell for this. Then when you
get your drive fixed, clean install Windows. You should do this anyway to
get off all the old settings from your previous job.

If you have a floppy disk drive (FDD) or are able to borrow a bootable
external FDD then go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and
download the boot disk, this will enable you to reset any system
password on an NT class
operating system.
