I have a LOT of problems with my computer

At first, my computer would be randomly restarting. I download thing
all the time, could be a virus. This started right after installe
Diablo II. So I decided to see if reformatting my C partitio
(nothing but windows stuff on it) and I reinstall with Windows X
64-bit edition. (At this point I bought a new power supply to see i
that was the problem.. it wasn't so I returned it) It has all kind
of problems (sound drivers for my motherboard doesn't work, Diablo I
crashing with some random error) so I go and borrow a friends Window
XP Pro disk to try to install that, and this is when the bigges
problems start. So I start formatting to this version of windows an
I get the error when it is copying files (many of the files I had t
hit retry several times one) ntfs.sys 0x00000024 in a blue screen. S
I figured there must be something wrong with this CD, and decide to g
back to Windows 64-bit until I could find another version of windows
I start formatting with the 64-bit CD again and when it is copyin
files (with only a few retry on certain files) it gets the sam
error. Now I guess it is a hard drive problem, buy a new one, and i
turns out it isn't (haven't returned yet). I then get another versio
of Windows XP Pro to see if both CD's are broken. I put in this CD an
right after it says "Setup is starting windows" it shows a
error saying "CDFS_FILE_SYSTEM" at the top an
"cdfs.sys" at the bottom. I tried taking out each ram an
trying each individually, using only one of my two sticks it got
little further, when copying files it got to the file cdcopy.dll an
it wouldn't work, I decided to see what would happen if I skipped it
and it comes out with the same "cdfs.sys" error again. :mad
I then get an extra CD drive from a friend (it was only an 8x, but i
worked for him to install XP) and in the last XP cd I used (the on
with the cdfs.sys problem) it still had the same problem at the sam
time (I didn't bother trying the ram again). I tried the original tw
(my 64-bit and my friends regular, which both has ntfs.sys error) an
they restarted right after it said "setup is inspecting you
hardware configuration" at the very beginning after booting fro
disk. One time I was lucky enough to get to after it says "setu
is starting up windows" then asked to hit enter to continue, an
it restarted. One time with the second XP cd (the one with th
ntfs.sys error but not the 64-bit edition) it got to some poin
before letting me hit enter to continue it came up with a blue scree
saying "USBPort.sys" "0x000000D1" at the botto
and "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" at the top. From th
last problem there I am assuming it is the motherboard.
I do remember before I got all new computer parts my computer wa

Change out the power supply first, I had a non-related power problem
but, I thought it was anyway (4.6x VDC on 5), it turned out to be the
Updated sound driver. You DON'T have a P4 it is an AMD something as it
is 64 bits. Check the caps on your motherboard (I don't know if Abit
has this problem anymore but it still exists). This kind of stuff may
be hard disk trouble, but I doubt it (OK, I don't like the HDDs you use
but I'm not going to be a fanboy right now). Run Memcheck 86 (type
memcheck on the boot screen of knoppix 4 CD or DVD).

All your symptoms point to bad RAM. But it could also be a RAM
incompatibility problem between mainboard and RAM (somewhat unlikely) or it
could be a bad mainboard or CPU. IF it was my box, I'd pull BOTH sticks of
RAM and replace them with ONE stick of brand new Kingston or OCZ. If that
doesn't work, I'd try replacing the mainboard. There is a slim possibility
that the CPU is bad. -Dave

He does have a PIV board, see here:

he may not have is a 64bit CPU, and as he doesn't seem to know what CPU he
has got, I don't see the point of having tried to install a 64 bit o/s. I
would change out (temporarily at least) the cheapo PSU, try a different
stick of ram and try again.

As the prior poster suggested, you are (hopefully) dealing with bad RAM.
I had a bad stick going on one system and didn't know it, but it would
cause me all kinds of problems when trying to install windows etc.
Similar to your problems.

Download Memtest 86 (if you need a site reference i will look it up
later, but google is your best bet). It's a freeware deal that burns
easily onto a blank CD, which you then boot from and it runs rather
extensive tests on your RAM. On mine, when i had the bad stick in, it
counted up a few thousand errors in just one pass (a normal RAM stick
should get 0 even after several passes). If you have multiple sticks
in, you might want to run memtest with only one in at a time.

This motherboard and processor does not a 64 bit computer make. Although it
sounds like the setup program sort of functions at 32 bits, I am surprised
you got as far as you did. Windows XP 64 bit is for 64 bit processors. The
Pentium 4 is 32 bits.

The model 630 (not sure if that's the one he has tho bevause he says pentium
4),is a 3.0Ghz with EM64T support, and thus will work with XP-64.

i am 100% sure i have a pentium, and it does support 64-bit,
remember it said it in one of the corners of the box, which i los
which is why I don't know what it is exactly. It did have som
different problems when I took out one piece of RAM, so I'll try th

Maybe I didn't notice the other devices because I was too busy
thinking about my computer. A battery backup is about the same
except probably less durable depending on your electrical
circumstances.

errors. Does amount of RAM matter, if so I have 1 GB

a bunch of random numbers and _ blinking at the bottom left. 5714
errors over 1 hour and 25 minutes

box. Contacting the electric company was how discovered

I would like to get an upgrade but now that I've paid for a cheap
line voltage regulator, I may as well get some use out of it. Having
good house current is the way to go, but I think that knowing it
remains that way would be fun too. I like monitoring tools.

turns off. Most of the time when i turn it on, fans start but nothin
happens and in like 10 seconds it turns off again. If I'm lucky I ca

sound PSU related under load and its failing. Also make sure of the
settings identifying the CPU.

i had same problem once because i put the
cpu cooler on backwards. 1/3 of thermal pad
was in contact with cpu, mobo shut off system
due to cpu too hot.
