Hi
For the past couple of days I have observed that the internet explorer and
windows explorer are grouped under the same taskbar button. This was never so
previously
Is this a virus ?

Vikram, if this is a virus, I have not seen what you describe reported in
this newsgroup.
Out of curiosity, I would like to know what grouping you get when you have
IE, My Computer and My Documents open, and then you open Windows Explorer.
Also, are you having any other symptoms?

I've seen this happen if you open Windows Explorer then type in a website in
the address bar. Technically it's still Windows Explorer, but since it's
integrated, it's also IE.

hi
first of all thanks all for responding and my apologies for not replying
earlier i thought i had set email notification on my user account! I only saw
your replies when i searched again before trying to repost.

to answer all your questions in a chronological order. pls pardon the
longish post

T.Waters - Initially all my computer internet explorer etc appear as
separate buttons on the taskbar each with its distinct icon. but once they
are grouped together because of too many buttons on the taskbar, they all
appear as windows explorer buttons and i have to click on the button group to
find that some buttons within that group are for IE, Windows Explorer and My
Computer etc.

Kelly:
i have tried to describe the symptoms as i see them. maybe a
screenshot of my taskbar would explain this better. I was used to having
Internet Explorer windows grouping separatly from windows explorer instances
on the taskbar. Currently this is just an irritation since i tend to have
multiple explorer ( of the both types) windows open and like to quickly
identify one or the other. But I am also worried that this might be some sort
of virus etc that has taken over my explorer.
for eg. if i close my explorer instance in the task manager and manage
to open a clean cmd instance from the same task manager, i can say start
iexplore and this opens a fresh ie instance which does not get grouped with
any new windows explorer instances that i may open. but if once a windows
explorer instance is opened, all future start iexplore cmds group with
explorer.exe.

Patrick
But why was the behaviour different earlier. what caused this change and
can i go back to the original behaviour.

thanks
