I can't send e-mail in windows mail

I recently moved and after setting up my computer, I am suddenly no longer
able to send messages through windows mail. i haven't had problems with it
before and find it odd that all of a sudden it is sending me an error
message. I'm not sure if I accidentally changed a setting or something.
Please help!! the error message I am receiving when trying to send e-mails
is:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'this is a test', Account:
'mail.optonline.net', Server: 'mail.optonline.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Thank you!!!!

P.S. I am able to receive messages. It is just sending them that I am
having a problem.

Does your connection to the server now cross from one internet provider's
equipment to another's? If so, such connections to port 25 are often
blocked to cause trouble for spammers. In this case, you should check if
optonline.net listens for outgoing mail on any port other than port 25;
other
ports are seldom blocked the same way. You'll probably have to call
optonline.net to do this, they don't seem to have put instructions on their
web site.

If they don't accept it on any other port, you can keep using the same
incoming email server and the same return address, but you need to
switch to using the outgoing email server of your new internet provider.

Are you still connected through Optonline as your ISP?
Is that the complete error message?

Based on what you have given us, I would bet that the ISP you are connected
to blocks port 25 for any but their own SMTP server.

Thank you, everyone, for your quick replies. They were helpful. I think the
problem is that i switched internet providers. I used to be with Optimum
online (which is also my main e-mail account), now it is cablevision/ road
runner. I'll give them a call and see if they can help...thanks again!

That'll do it every time.

That is definitely the problem. You can only access your old sending
server, if it uses Port 25 as yours does, when connected to the old
network.

You have to change your email settings to use the new servers. Your new
ISP will have lots of information on this on their website. Use their help
pages for "set up email".

Note that you could probably still *receive* mail from the old account until
the old ISP finally closes it down.

One other thing. If your system is a laptop and you travel anywhere (even
from building to building) with it, you'll run into this problem regularly.

The cheapest solution is to get a Google mail account, and set up your mail
so all the sent mail goes through the gmail servers, but all your received
mail comes through its proper server. This is pretty easy to do, and it's
free, and it lets you send and receive mail from anywhere in the world.
