I can't send a message from an e-mail link

When I try to send a message from an e-mail link I get an error message.
Even if I open Windows Mail and type in the e-mail address, I get the same
error message. I have checked and both Windows Explorer & Windows mail are
set as the default. Can you help?
Thanks.

I too am getting an error when I click on a "mailto" link. The error box says
"(e-mail address removed)" "Application Not Found". Is there a way to configure
Windows Mail so this can be done? Thank you in advance for any help.

Gary, Here is what I get. And now I see I am having problem sending all my
e-mail. What did I do?

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '([email protected])'. Subject
'Can't get logged in to site', Account: 'mail.mtc.net', Server:
'smtp.mtc.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 5.0.0
<([email protected])>... User address required', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Try both of these steps:

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail
Click OK

Then, follow these steps:

Click Set your default programs
Select Windows Mail from the list
Click Set this program as default
Click OK.

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Closely examine that recipient's email address for extraneous characters.
Instead of "<([email protected])>..." make sure Windows Mail
sees only a clean (e-mail address removed) .

Right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
