I can't see my DVD-ROM/CD-RW

It's a Sony. I was able to see it until recently. It's the first time in
all the time I've had WINXP on this machine that it's not showing in My
Computer. As with the previous OS's I've had, WIN98 and WIN2K, I've ensured
that CDROM.SYS is in the root of my system drive, but I don;t know that that
is any real part of the issue, anymore. Of course, I've ensured the
connections are good.

Any help sent my way will be greatly appreciated.

Now, I see the device as a reader, only, in Windows Media Player. I can't
burn anything!
