Hi all
I may be thicker than a whale omelette but...

I have a broadband always on connection on my host pc. Router and modem working well. My laptop with an (external Wireless USB Adapter) recognises my wireless network (and regularly tells me that it has an excellent strength signal). But when I try to connect to the internet on the laptop, it says it can't connect. I've run the wizard on both host and laptop, and I just don't know what else to do

Can anyone help me?
Thanks

Running the Wiz on the Host won't help with your complaint, since the desktop
(your host, I presume?) is not in the path between your laptop and the web.

Temporarily disable WPA or WEP (whichever you use) and all firewall apps.
Check that the SSID on your laptop matches the SSID on the router. Normally
you should enable the router's DHCP server function, and set the laptop to
be a DHCP client. Run CMD, then type IPCONFIG/ALL in the CMD window and
make sure the IPA and the subnet mask are reasonable; 192.168.1.100 and
255.255.255.0 are common values.

If that doesn't fix your problems, let us know how far you got and what
is still wrong.

Hi.
May be this can Help.

Hi Bob
Very many thanks for the advice. How and where (and what are) WEP and WPA. Also, I can't seem to see the router in my hardware profile so am not sure how to check its properties.
On the plus side, I have done the IP stuff!
I told you I was thicker than a whale omelette!
Thanks

Thanks Jack - I'll give them a go
