The issue with the firewall and the Internet connection is
easily resolved:
If you are on Windows XP Service Pack 2, Please type this
at a command prompt:

netsh winsock reset

Hit the enter key, then restart the machine.

For Windows 2000, Pre SP2 versions of XP, or for Windows
Server 2003 pre sp1, follow the procedure in this
Microsoft Knowledge base article:

I have the same issue and the tech article does not fix
the problem. I even have it on a computer that has no
firewall and the LSP's are clean. Microsoft only.
The tech article does not solve the problem.

That article isn't intended to fix this error.

I have one machine out of 3 dozen or so with this issue, and haven't solved
it. Maybe I can give it another try tonight. It is in use during the day,
so I can only play with it outside of work hours, and I tend to spend time
in these groups rather than getting real work done--I have tried a great
variety of things--I am not aware of anything about this machine which is
significantly different from other machines in the same office--I know them
all quite well--software, upgrade paths, etc.

I don't have a fix for this issue.

Bill I have 3 machines in 3 different locations with same
issue and all are W2K sp4.
Error is check your internet proxy settings.

Are you by chance using a Linksys Router as a firewall? I
have the same problem and I'm wondering if that's the issue.

Thanks - Same error. Mine is an XP SP2, which is an upgrade with retail
media over a DELL OEM W2k sp4. However, I have a nearly identical
machine--same upgrade path, similar software load, which doesn't have this
issue. One thought that I have is to compare some registry areas between
the two, but I haven't figured out just what specific areas I want to look
at.

I doubt it. In my case I'm seeing this error on a single machine behind an
ISA Server firewall (this is a software firewall running on Windows 2000.)
dozens of other machines behind that same firewall don't have the issue.
I've got other clients with Linksys firewalls in place that aren't seeing
this issue.

What model Linksys? Some of the newer models may have more formal firewall
functionality than the older BEFSR and wireless routers I've worked with.
