Hyper Threading

Art Sheppard

I have a Windows "XP" Pro system, and the
other day a software installation utility
gave me a rundown on the system. My question
is this utility said that Hyper Threading was
not enabled. I had the understanding that XP
Pro would automatically enable Hyper
Threading if the processor supported. The
processor is a P-4 2.66 GHZ, and I don't
recall the Chip Set on the Mother Board.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

You can enable or disable Hyper Threading in your PC BIOS.
Check there to see if it is correctly enabled.
If you don't know to get into your BIOS or what you are looking for you will
need to consult your PC and motherboard/BIOS manuals

Art,

If memory serves, the only P4 with a 533 MHz FSB (front side bus) that
supported hyperthreading was the 3.06 GHz version. The 800 MHz FSB Northwood
CPUs all support hyperthreading. (I haven't been keeping up with the newer
Prescott CPUs - they may differ.) I don't recall whether hyperthreading is
available with a 3.06 GHz CPU when it's used with an older chipset (like an
845G), but I expect that it is (may require a sufficiently up-to-date BIOS).

If the CPU and mainboard support hyperthreading, you may also have to turn
it on using a BIOS setting. My mainboard (Asus P4P800, 865PE chipset) has
such a setting.

HTH.
