human interface device access

My hp scanner has a button that starts the scanner wizard in xp. It has
stopped working. I have traced the problem to the human interface device
access service. No matter what I do, it won't start. It gives error #2
saying it can't find the file specified.

I did some googling and have found that hidserv.dll, mouhid.sys, and
mouclass.sys are all in windows\system32.

I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for the link but nothing there solves my problem. I'll keep trying.
Now my system can't even find the scanner although it is installed.
