Huge delay after unlocking workstation

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 and had ran the latest Windows Updates at the
end of December 2005. I lock my workstation when I walk away, and when I
come back I simply enter my password and I am instantly brought back to my
desktop ready to go.

Then, a couple weeks ago (June 2006), I ran the latest Windows Update again
and applied about 30 updates (including the Windows Genuine Advantage
update). Now - whenever I unlock my workstation - the user that I enter my
password into moves to the center of the blue login screen (the screen that's
up when you lock your workstation) - and I sit there for upwards of 5 minutes
before my desktop appears and I can use the machine.

I de-installed all of the Windows updates that I had just installed and the
huge delay is still there. I was Not able to remove the Windows Genuine
Advantage update - so it makes me wonder if this is not the culprit.

I can't tell what it is happening during this delay - but it is totally
unacceptable, and any information anyone has about this would be Hugely
appreciated!

Thanks!

Since you say this is a workstation, does that mean you are a member of
a domain? If so, check your DNS settings. I don't know why they would
change and don't see what MS updates would have to do with it, but it
certainly can't hurt you to look.

Your workstation should only be looking to the server for DNS.

Actually, I'm not a member of a domain - I called it workstation because of
the "Lock Workstation" command which was probably incorrect.

BUT - I Did figure out the problem. I committed the cardinal sin of only
changing one thing (running Windows Updates) except for the Other thing I
changed also! I also upgraded to the latest version of SpyWare Doctor - and
THAT was what was causing all of my problems. I killed that process and
things worked fine. I then uninstalled it, and reinstalled an older version
of SpyWare Doctor, and things have been running perfectly. (The upgrade may
not have installed correctly to begin with, but I haven't bothered to
re-upgrade yet). Thanks for the help though!

I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to post the
solution.
