The HP Photosmart 1000 series have always been trouble. If you have the time, they have very helpful people you can discuss and cuss with an online chat to take you places you may have missed.

Remove the cartridge and immediately clean it with a very soft cotton rag or a Viva paper towel. Do the same thing with the black cartridge. Then reinsert the cartridges into the printer.
Otherwise, the only thing I know that works is to get an incartride with a date on the box that is a year away.
Unfortunately, the once famous reliability of HP deskjet an Photosmart printers has sunk to an unrecoverable low. Their expensive All in One printer - scanner - fax machines are an absolute disaster.
The problem: The electronics fail on the system board of the printer. Replacement will fix it, but HP will charge you $80 for that $10 board.
