hp scanner stopped working

My scanner stopped working. It is still physically warm
so it's getting power. The head did move, once. XP
gives me message like, "scanner already in use", but it
isn't.

The scanner has worked for months wih XP. The only
change lately is I added a Wireless G USB adapter.

I have removed the scanner from the device manager and
rebooted to let XP automatically pickup the scanner. XP
acted like everything worked...but no joy.

I downloaded the latest driver from www.hp.com,
installed, but...no joy.

I uninstalled the wireless adapter, reinstalled the
scanner, but no joy.

Any ideas?

My PC
Celeron 1.1, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB HD
Win XP Home, SP1
USB 1 on a PCI card.

Scanner
HP Scanjet 4100C

Thanks

This isn't a Windows problem - it sounds to me as though the scanner head
tractor motor has died (i.e. the thing that pulls it back and forth) - it
happens. That scanner is quite old by computing standards and the motor (or
the belt that drives it) may simply have worn out (especially if the scanner
has been in constant use). You could have it repaired but, because of the
age of the unit, it would make better sense to simply purchase a new
scanner. It doesn't, IMNSHO, have anything to do with anythin you've
installed on your system - or Windows, for that matter.
