HP Scanjet 4100C

I just got a new computer with Windows XP. When I try to
install my scanner software, it gives me a message that it
is not compatible with XP, therefore I cannot load it. I
searched the HP webpage, and they have one driver patch
available to download, but when I try to run the patch, I
get a message that continuing with the installation may
cause the system to become unstable and it is highly
recommended that you stop...., so I stopped! The only
other thing I found on the HP page was a workaround, which
said to turn off the computer, plug in the scanner (USB),
restart the computer and XP would install the drivers.
Well, it did, and the Device Manager indicates that the
scanner driver for a Scanjet 4100C is installed and that
the device is working properly.

So, given that, how do I get my scanner to work. HP lists
it as compatible with XP, and the Windows XP page under
WIA indicates it is compatible, and it looks like the
drivers have loaded, but I cannot load the software. Is
there something I'm missing in getting the scanner to work?

Thanks to whomever can help!

i had a similar problem with my hp scanner, the software
supplied was designed for win98 not xp although
aparently 'compatible'. i simply pluged it in, switched
on computer, xp detected it installed some generic
drivers for me then i simply press one of the buttons on
the front of the scanner a xp scanning wizard begins, ok
theres no flash hp features just generic xp ones but it
works fine!

hope this helps

That is exactly what mine did, except when I press the
buttons, nothing happens. I got the impression that it
would work as you described. As I mentioned in my post,
it is there in the Control Panel, XP loaded the drivers
and when I run a test in comes back that it is working
properly..., I just can't get it to actually perform a
scan! Anyone else?

I did download a patch from the HP web page, but in the
middle of installation a message window pops up that says
continuing with the installation may make the system
unstable and it is recommended that you stop..., so I
did. Maybe I need to go ahead anyway?

Thanks,
Al

Rich,
Thanks. That is the software that I did download, which,
when I ran it, gave me the message that "continuing with
the installation may cause the system to become
unstable". So, do I need to uninstall the driver that is
loaded currently (if so, how do I do that)? Or just
unplug the scanner, install the software(ignore the
warning and complete the install), then shut down, plug
the scanner back in, and start it up again?

I just came of a nightmare with the worms and virus' that
were going around (my old computer), so I'm leary of
anything that may make this new machine "unstable"!

Thanks,
Al

I'd recommend you first disconnect the device from your computer. After PnP
reports the device has been removed, then remove any other HP Scanjet
software you may have on your computer. (Why? If you have any HP software
installed or partially installed - it may interfere with the inbox driver
working properly.)

Reboot.

Once you are in Windows, plug the scanner in. After PnP recognizes the
device and installs the inbox driver - try to scan again.

good luck!

I'll give that a try, although I haven't installed any HP
software (it wouldn't even open the CD when I put it in
the drive, just gave me a message that the software was
not compatible).

Thanks,
Al
