USB Conflict? Scanner and Printer

I have a hp scanjet 3970 connected to a usb that was working fine until I
connected a Brother 5140 printer to another USB port. Now the scanner won't
work properly (it makes some noise but nothing happens) unless the printer
usb is unplugged or disabled. Then the scanner works fine. Sounds like some
kind of conflict, but I don't know how to fix it.

This could be caused so I believe, if you use two usb sockets that are
shared - i.e. insufficient power to cope with two bits of hardware sort of
being in the same usb socket.
I had this problem with usb1 so do not know if it can be the same with usb2
if thats what you have.
You need to go into hardware/device manager and right click on each usb root
hub/properties then power and see what is using it.
If you see both your items in one then find an unused usb for the other
piece of equipment.
Sorry if this explanation appears incoherent.

It looks like the USB ports are not able to provide power to the two devices.
I would get a powered USB hub (has its own power supply.)

I got the solution from HP tech. They had me unplug everything, uninstall
the serial host controllers, and restart the system. The USB ports had a
"memory" of a device that had been plugged in and were conflicting the
printer and scanner. It works fine now.
