HP Scanner Creates problem in second account

I have 2 users on my WinXP (SP2) system and installed an HP Scanner (4200C).
It runs fine on my Power Account but when I switch to the Limited account I
immediately get the message "Still Image Devices Utility has encountered a
problem and needs to shut down". The error message it is about to send
mentions hplamp.exe so I removed it (it's just to turn the lamp off after a
period of no use), but removing it does not allow the scanner to work in the
limited account -- I get the message "There is a problem with registry
settings -- they have been reset to default value". I cleanly uninstalled
the scanner software, removed all the related files and installed the latest
version but that problem does not go away. I know this is an HP problem but
there is no help to be had there so maybe a WinXP person can help.

Hi,

It means there is a problem with permissions on either the program folder or
a registry entry being used by the program. Try assigning 'read & execute'
permissions to the limited account username. To do this (I am assuming you
have Pro as you mentioned a power user acct), disable "simple file sharing"
in the view tab of folder options. Then locate the installation folder for
the HP software, right click it and choose properties. Go to the security
tab and locate the user in the list, then add the read and execute
permissions.

I'm sure you are right about the permissions being a source of the problem,
but changing the permissions of all visible folders does not help. I did a
very careful uninstal and removed every sign of HP software -- even in
systems files -- and carefully reinstalled it with all the relevant folders
("Scanjet" and "sj655") set to give the limited user all priveliges and it
still gives the same registry settings error. I am not a regedit person so I
am reluctant to look there for hints. But this is a perennial HP problem --
I have had trouble with their drivers from the first time I installed the HP
scanner.

Thanks for your help anyway.
