Can't Add printer/scanner

Trying to add HP printer/scanner, but process won't go beyond print spooler.
I tried to shut off and restart the spooler but received error code 1053. I
downloaded the Windows patch to fix that, but it still doesn't work (I can't
shut off and restart the spooler).
The folks at HP say that if I can restart the spooler, that should enable me
to install the printer/scanner, but I can't restart it.
Should I give up on the HP model and buy a different model, or is there
something I can do shut off the darn print spooler?
