HP Scanner 6100c - SCSI

All,

My HP Scanner 6100c - SCSI no longer works. In Device Manager, I see the
RAID entry for it, but it has the yellow stop sign. I've searched the web and
downloaded what I think are proper drivers, but when I go to update driver
and point to where I installed them, none work.

Any help is appreciated.

Which SCSI card is installed in your PC ? If you Double-Click the
entry in Device Manager - what does the details box relate about
the device being inactive ? When you say "No longer works", did
it ever work in your current configuration. Just to make sure we are
talking about the same issue, it's the SCSI/RAID controller that has
the Yellow !, and not the scanner - Right ?
SCSI is more complicated that other Mass Storage technologies,
it requires ID assignments, Bus Termination...
As to drivers you can force a specific driver onto XP - but requires
a different option path than the traditional Update drivers.

It is the card that came with the scanner, bought new. SYMCxx or something
like that. It did work, but I needed to re-load Windows and now it doesn't.
The entry for it in Device Manager is under SCSI/RAID.

Can you post the exact descriptor in Device Manager ? - it's likely
a Symbios chipset SCSI card. Also it's important to know what the
details box says concerning the exclamated Device entry.
It's obviously an older Scanner/SCSI setup as those aren't generally
available anymore and have been replaced by USB scanners. That
SCSI card isn't certified for NT/2000/XP use and I can't remember
if drivers are provided by HP. Have you looked on HP's website for
Drivers/Docs on the Scanner/SCSI card ? XP may or may not have
native drivers for that SymC card.

The native ( original ) SCSI interface doesn't work on Windows XP.
If this is your case, you must have to obtain another interface to do
the work. Call the support of HP to best directions.

Last I looked HP scsi scanners do not have drivers for XP, therefore are
not XP compatable. USB scanners are dirt cheap and even a cheap USB
scanner will have better resolution anyway. I got one a while back for
about $25 US.

There are no drivers for SCSI scanners. They are built into WinXP as well as the TWAIN
compliant drivers.

You need to look at the SCSI chain and verify that the SCSI controller can see the SCSI
device and make sure the SCSI chain is properly terminated.

Depending upon the SCSI controller, which you fail to mention the make and model, it should
be available in s creen during the Power On Self Test (POST). Most controllers, such as
Adaptec, have a "hot key" like "Ctrl + A" to go into the SCSI BIOS. From there you should be
able to view the SCSI IDs and the devices attached. If the controller does not show the
SCSI Scanner then the OS will certainly have a problem with it.

scanner will "Plug 'n Play". They don't need external drivers and that's why they are not
obtainable and it is a faux conclusion that since the drivers are not obtainable that the
hardware is incompatible with the OS. Such is the same with many printers. Since the OS
contains properly running stock printer drivers, the printer drivers are not obtainable.

Thanks for the correction and additional info on driver availability,
David. It has been a while, I may have been thinking of Win2K not XP.

Read your previous replied to other respondents.

My first question would be did you do an upgrade from a previous MS OS to
XP?
My guess is XP managed to use your current scsi card using the former
drivers. Now, with the overinstall, that has been overwritten. XP won't
accept drivers not written for XP for a new or overwrite install.

Your scsi card may not have a bios. So, don't bother looking for this if
you never saw a scsi bios summation during boot prior to entry to XP. This
should list your attached scsi devices by scsi id. This would follow the
normal PC bios summation prior to entry to XP.

Your scsi card is an ISA model, no scsi bios. You're using a SCSI II
interface.

Its interesting, since PCs with ISA slot interfaces have been going away for
sometime. Find it odd that you were able to install XP on such a platform.

I have two older printers, both of which XP did provide drivers for
during installation. Regardless, when I checked, the printer drivers
WERE obtainable from the manufacturer website. You analogy is a very
bad one and irrelevant to the situation at hand.

Not in all cases ! There are *many* printers where the manufacturer does not provide
drivers for becuase they come stock in Windows. Not too long ago I was asked to find
drivers for a printer (I think it was an Apollo P2200) for Win2K. There are no drivers for
it. It emulated a HP InkJet. I think I remeber it being the HP 632c. The next day the
person got back to me and told it was work OK.

It is an excellent analgy. Too bad it flew over your head, but it was relevent to Steve and
I know he understood it.

Thanks to all for the excellent replies. and to Lil Dave, here's what
precipitated my probs.

I forgot my XP password, didn't know what to do, so I re-loaded Windows XP -
don't ask, bonehead move, I know. Anyway, to get past the password block and
do the re-load, I changed the boot path so that I could boot from the CD, and
here is where I did the re-load (and my problems started).

In addition to the scanner no longer working,

1) Control Panel Add/Remove Programs does show anywhere near the number of
programs I have sitting on the PC
2) Things like NTI CD burner and Norton Anti-virus also don't work anymore
3) Outlook doesn't work anymore, had to load Outlook Express, re-import a
backed-up message file (no address book)
4) Installing new programs like Nero CD burner or TDK DVD-burner don't work
- I get a registry forbidden error
5) My desktop was completely blank, and I had loads of stuff there before
this fiasco

So, I am hosed big-time. But, one step at a time, I'll check out the
excellent links provided to start at the bottom and work back up. Ugh.

Ah, but somebody GAVE MS those drivers. Microsoft does not write
drivers for all the hardware. Those are provided by the companies
that make the hardware. So those companies DO have the drivers. For
some bizarro reason, they just chose not to publish them for download
on the internet.

The scanner will not work, period, until the scsi card is operating properly
in XP. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 until you fix this. That is,
ignore the scanner problem until you get the scsi card working.

98/98SE to ME "upgrades" had similar hardware driver problems. That is, ME
may not have had the proper hardware driver, but was able to use the prior
driver during the upgrade install. A ME OS overinstall, after the upgrade
install, would result in inoperability of such hardware.
