HP Scanjet 5400cse

Hi all,

I have an HP Scanjet 5400cse scanner, USB connection to Windows XP Pro, SP2.

I recently tried to use the HP Precision Pro s/w to do a scan. There is a
"guided steps" icon, that when depressed, shows the scanner steps to the left
of the scan area. They have disappeared. Clicking the icon only toggles
between full screen and split screen. When split screen there is an empty
white area where the steps used to be.

I have no idea how long it has been like this, except to guess at less than
a month.

What I did: I uninstalled the HP Prec. Pro. In windows explorer, I deleted
any residual folders, and rebooted. I re-installed the s/w from CD. No
change. HP no longer supports this scanner.

The s/w is still functional, but a pain in the butt. Could there have been
a ms update that affected this s/w? Which one?

BTW I never use the buttons on the scanner, I prefer the s/w.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.
Joanne

Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it is already checked, yet there are no guided steps.

Do you have any help on the registry update. You must be very specific
because I don't do registry stuff normally. I am assuming that I must
uninstall again; clean up residual folders, and then do the registry thing.
Please be very specific.

Thanks.
Joanne

Hi Joanne,

I have the same scanner, try this,
start the software in the upper left corner under view is their a check by
the listing guided steps?

Note: Sometimes when you uninstall sofeware and delete remaining folders
like you did doesn't help, their could be a registry entry that also needs
to be deleted as well.
Good luck.

Did you reboot after you uninstalled the software? if not uninstall it and
reboot then reinstall it again.Sometimes registry entrys will not be deleted
after an uninstall intil a reboot is done.

Next
Control panel>admin tools>computer management.
Left hand pane click on disk management after a couple of seconds on the
right side results will be displayed if you see the word "dirty" run
checkdisc this may very well fix your problem.(this has happened to me in
the past)

How to run check disc.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-
us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true

Modifying the registry can be dangerous for a newbie take these precautions
first.
Erunt registry backup.(backsup the entire registry)
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
or

Uninstall the software first

Create a new folder on your desktop and name it registry backups, next
bring up the run command (start>run)
type in "regedit" this will bring up the registry editor, in the upper left
corner under edit click on "find", now type in scanjet 5400 and click
"find next" any entries left over will show on the right hand pane, hilite
the first entry and under file (upper left corner)
select export now navigate to the folder you created and save this entry to
that folder this is incase you need to put this entry back into the
registry(you are backing this one entry up) now do this same thing to each
entry, after you have backed up all entries on the right side delete them
one at a time. (incase you need to put these entire's back into the registry
open the backup folder and one entry at a time right click on each entry and
select import, you will get a dialog box asking you do you really want to do
this? say yes, the entry you deleted is now back in the registry.)

After you have deleted these entrys reboot and then reinstall the scanjet
software.
hopefully everything is back to normal

Good luck!

Hi, ojann, when my HP-scanner quit I found exchanging the USB-cable fixed
the problem.
It;s worth a try.
Good luck,
Gerry
