HP Scanjet 5370C (USB) vs. Windows XP Pro

I bought the Scanjet when I was still using Windows 98. Several months
ago, I switched to Win XP Pro and installed all peripherals--scanner,
printer, computer camera, portable hard drive, etc.--without any
problem. But recently I was having trouble with THUMBS and some graphic
files--esp. videos--and decided to get rid of stuff like KAZAA and REAL
PLAYER. So I uninstalled Win XP, got rid of the unwanted stuff,
reinstalled XP. Then the trouble began. Everything but the scanner
came back aboard. No scanner recognized. I tried the update HP driver
but still no success. (Incidentally, videos now work fine with WINDOWS
MEDIA PLAYER.) Suggestions? -- John

Please describe what you did to uninstall Windows XP? Do you mean you
originally installed XP over 98, elected to save your setup and then
uninstalled XP back to 98 or do you mean you formatted and started over?
Unless you started clean, there's no guarantee you got rid of Kazaa, Real
Player or anything else you think you removed as remnants remain.

Second, even though an uninstall of XP is available if you've elected to
save your previous setup, it is far from perfect, at least with regard to
what it appears you've done.

If you reinstalled XP as an upgrade over 98, did you install the scanner
before the XP upgrade or after. If before, did you make sure the scanner
was being recognized before the upgrade as it is highly unlikely an upgrade
would fix such an issue if it were not previously recognized. This is
important as it's a clue to the source of the issue.
