HP ScanJet 5300C and Win XP Pro

Windows XP Pro does not recognize my HP ScanJet 5300C
scanner - although the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition)
states that the ScanJet 5300c is supported - URL -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;293356&Product=winxp#appliesto

I have downloaded the latest drivers from HPs website for
the 5300c and XP - they do not work - Any help would be
appreciated?

Don, Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove the
Scanner Software. Physically disconnect the Scanner. Restart and let
Windows Load. Then restart again and reinstall the Scanner Software. Toward
the end of the install it will require reconnecting the
Scanner. That should work. If not you can use the Parallel port.

Be very careful. See my recent thread on "Add Hardware Wizard Expired".
I tried to install my old HP 5300C on XP Pro recently and it killed the
add hardware wizard stone dead. The sequence of events was that the
drivers were installed from latest HP distribution, the unit plugged in
and the PC would then not boot at all - not even a glimmer. So far
nothing that I have tried has unwound the damage that was done to the
OS.

I have subsequently tested on another XP PC (different USB chipset) with
slightly different results. This PC did boot up, but the HP INF files
are wrong so it does not successfully install the USB drivers and sticks
it in under "Other Devices" with a yellow question mark and reports
Device "Hewlett Packard HP 5300C" Manufacturer "Unknown" - no drivers
are required for this device.

At this stage going into Control Panel, Device and forcing a reload of
the true drivers for the HP scanner manually and a reboot works for me.
They should be something like hpgt53*.dll and a couple of others.

The problems occur if after installing these drivers properly you cannot
get the PC to boot up at all with the scanner connected. If this happens
then you are in the mad house.

Try this at your own risk. Good luck. You might also want to take a look
on comp.sys.hp.hardware about the alleged potentially short working
lifetime of certain models of HP scanners on USB connections to XP
machines.

Rich,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried a similar plan and
tried connecting it via the parallel port. I will try
your process verbatim and hopefully that will work.
Thanks again.

Unclear. But lets put it this way - the same hardware installed on Win98
SE PC with some Adaptec SCSI cards makes the system almost unbootable.

On the XP machine that it didn't wreck the HP 5300 scanner works very
well.

I will never buy another HP scanner. The hardware and the scan quality
is excellent but the drivers and the driver installers are beyond the
pale.
