hp psc 1210v "all-in-one"

I had one of the original hp all-in-ones and found that
when I bought my new computer with XP, I could not use
the all in one as a scanner, only a printer. I went out
and bought a new all in one that advertised compatibility
with XP. I got home and installed it using the install
disc that came with the unit. XP saw it as a camera and
a printer but not as a scanner. I worked through the
troubleshooting wizards. No luck. Since XP doesn't even
offer any scanner drivers except a Xerox network device,
I contacted HP. After 3 hours on-line, the help desk had
me turn off the power save on the device and I was able
to get the HP Director with all 5 icons on it. I was
thrilled and hung up, expecting that we had fixed the
problem. When I tried to use the device....still no
luck. I got an error message that said it could not
communicate with the device. When I went into the
printer folder, hp psc 1210v, properties, print test
page, I got a beautiful test page. It seems to
communicate with it as a printer but still doesn't
acknowledge the device as a scanner. I tried to
uninstall the hardware using the CD and got an error
message. I tried to uninstall using the add/remove
option in control panel and got the same message. It
took away the printer but can not complete the process.

I am desperate. I have a project to complete and no
scanner. I am going to try AGAIN, to restore to the
system before I added the device and see if I can at
least get back to square one. Any suggestions?

Are there any windows xp upgrades that include scanner
drivers. It doesn't make much sense to buy any scanner
if Windows XP is only going to recognize camera drivers

Thanks

I have a 1210 installed and it works fine. The manual states to disconnect
the printer before uninstalling. Then uninstall by going to Start/All
Programs and choosing the uninstall option under Hewlett-Packard (not
Ad/Remove Programs). The software should be installed before you connect
the printer. If you have problems uninstalling, try Safe Mode. You can
also try the Scan button on the printer. I generally scan using Irfanview,
free software on the net. But the software should work. I think the key is
to install the software before you connect the printer. Hope this helps.
