HP printer software update released on August 22 2004

HP printer software update released on August 22, 2004 for HP 2300 caused
errors with message "function address 00x780100497 caused protection fault"

Users could not get into printer properties (to change to duplex printing,
for example).

Similar problem with update for HP 4200 printers.

Same problem reported in newsgroup with subject "Error with latest XP driver
update from Windows Update"

Fix reported there (delete registry key for specific printer, install a
local printer with the HP-supplied driver) seems to work.

Why aren't more people reporting this problem?

Catemaco,
I have been looking everywhere to try and find a fix for this exact error
that IE generates when trying to print a web page on my HP 4200 that you just
described. This is the first thing I've found. Although, I'm trying to keep
the users on the print server rather than installing local tcp/ip port for
mgt. sake. Have you found anything else on this besides installing the
printer locally? Also, my problem arose when the print driver was upgraded
via "windows update" so I'm not sure if that may have anything to do with it
or not.

Catemaco, posted a reply earlier but it didn't get posted. I have the same
issue on win2k pro pc's w/a networked HP 4200n printer. I get the exact same
error when trying to print web pages in IE. I've been looking for a week for
something about this and yours is the first info I've found. Thanks. BTW,
have you(or anyone else) found anymore info on this by chance?

I didn't mean to install local printers on each workstation. Look in this
same forum for a message with the subject "Error with latest XP driver update
from Windows Update" for more detailed instructions on how to fix this
problem.

We decided to call Microsoft for this, since even after applying the fix
described in the reply by "chrisckn", we were still having problems printing
from Internet Explorer and Outlook (but not from Word, or other applications,
even from Mozilla). Here's what they recommended: switch the driver on any
HP 4200 printers on your server to some other driver (e.g. HP 4100) to free
up any and all files for that driver. Then in (print) Server Properties,
drivers tab, delete the HP 4200 driver(s). Install a known good driver. The
Microsoft tech suggested the Point and Print driver, which has some
advantages over the standard driver (may not provide all the features that
the standard driver does).

You may have to stop and re-start the print spooler service to clear the old
driver from memory and load the new driver.

Then switch the driver on your 4200 printers to the newly installed driver.

This worked for the HP 4200.

It did not work for the HP 2300's that we have. Microsoft guesses that the
files are not being replaced properly, and that a reboot will be necessary.
I'll try that when I can schedule a reboot.

A look at logs indicated the Windows Update was not successful, even though
it generated no error message.

Please, folks, if you're having a problem, report it to Microsoft. They
don't think this is a serious problem.

Hi,

I don't understand any of this thread. The subject implies the update
was issued by HP, but later in the thread they talk about Microsoft.

Why are people installing this update in the first place and who told
them to install it, and why are they talking about "Windows Update".

Windows update is for home users and I can't imagine many have HP2300s?

Why are people using Microsoft's "Windows Update" to install printer
drivers? Surely no one would do this on a production print server??

Yes the new driver is the problem. I spoke with an HP print driver
developer and the issue with this is the new driver expects a different data
structure than the old driver. The data structure is stored in the registry
and will not be deleted until all the printers that use the driver no longer
use it and the old driver is deleted from the server. Then install the new
driver. I am sure HP will fix this but I did not get any time frame on
this.

If you have many printers on the server that use this driver, I like to
change all the drivers to an inbox that is not even closely related so you
remember the name (make sure no one is printing to the devices so shoot for
off peak time). You can only delete the driver when it is no longer in use.
I have had instances when I have to stop the spooler and kill the
explorer.exe process in order to unload the driver modules from memory. Add
the new driver and change the printers back to the updated module.
