HP Photosmart 3310 incompatible with XP Media Center Edition?

C

Clark

OK here's one for you all -- would appreciate any insight

Bought an HP Photosmart 3310 All In One which installed on my wireless
network ok. Then installed the software on my laptop (XP Pro 2002
SP2) which is wirelessly connected to the network with no problem and
the laptop could find the printer ok. So the printer itself is ok.

THE PROBLEM: I could not install the software on my brand new Dell (XP
Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP2). By that I mean the setup.exe
file would not run! No Splash screen, no Install shield showing up, no
error messages --Nothing! Just some disk action going on, but
absolutely nothing happening.

Several hours of back and forth emails (a Keystone Cops affair with
different hp reps answering each email without necessarily reading the
prior) with HP, with always a failure of setup.exe to run. Finally an
HP rep tells me that the software does not support my operating
system.

I dont believe that, but it is true that they could not come up with
a way to get the software installed

Does anyone have an idea what to do? For the record here are the
things already tried:

Transferring CD files to c: drive and install from there
Download the WebInstall files from hp to c: drive and install from
there
Install in safe mode
Disable all startup items, and all running services except Microsoft
ones and try running setup

None of the above worked. Oh, and doing a re-boot after trying any of
the above gave the window about Ending the All in One program, which
program was not responding, so I had to end it -- indicating to me
that setup was trying to start to do something and failing.

Any help out there?

TIA

Clark

Hmm HP says XP compatable without reference to any subtypes.
There are some things you might do, based upon the will not install info on
HP's site under your printer.

Yes, I have looked through all the knowledge base articles. I don't
see anything there that relates to my problem. None of the error
messages do because I don't get far enough to see an error message :=(

Let me know what the x's say.

Thanks
