hp photosmart 1000 and xp

I've just upgraded to xp from ME but I can't get my hp photosmart 1000
installed. I downloaded the new driver from the HP site. Everytime I
try it XP says the printer is not connected. It is connected by
parallel port. Any ideas?

Is it plug and play? If it is, and the "Found New
Hardware Wizard" comes up, click 'install software
automatically', next and follow any directions that come
up.

Not plug and play? Go to start, control panel, printers &
faxes, tasks, add a printer. UNcheck automatically
detect..., select 'use following port', select LPT1,
next. It may tell you it wants a COM port, and if it
does, click on one and follow the directions.

Also verify the BIOS settings for the parallel port on the computer
