Hi,

I'm tring to install a network printer and have the original CD with the
drivers and have also downloaded the drivers. On trying to select the printer
after getting to the selection screen "Have Disk", I select the disk or the
directory with the drivers but this still does not pick up the printer and so
I am left with a blanjk screen. It is looking for autorun.inf and there is a
file called autorun, I have looked to rename this but still no joy.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Could you clarify this? Are you stuck trying to get the computer to
recognize the printer, or have you already got the printer recognized, and
now you're stuck trying to get the HP software to install?

first, in folder options, untick the 'hide extensions for known file types'.
Then you can see if your autorun is actually autorun.exe
it may be Windows just doesn't like the install files.

Hi,

basically I am installing the printer, in the add printer wizard, I go to
select the printer, but as the model is not specified, I go and choose "have
disk" to install from the original disk, but when I point to it it does not
come back with a name in the printer selection screen. I have downloaded the
drivers onto my c:drive and look to point to it as well and it is looking for
a file but no details of the printer come through and hence I cannot install
the correct drivers,

Sometimes you have to actually install the printer software first, then
Windows may find it.
If the only .inf file in the folder is the autorun, it is not seeing the
driver for the printer.
it would usually be hp1410.inf or such, NOT autorun.inf.
The autorun file usually starts an install file, setup.exe or such.

Have you gone to the HP web site ( http://www.hp.com ), searched for the
particular model printer and located the installation instructions?

I really don't understand what you are trying to accomplish. However you
should be able to get your query answered at:

Did you attach the printer to the computer *before*
installing the software? HPs don't like that. In fact the
setup manual specifically tells you not to. (At least mine
do.)

If that is the case then at this point, the best thing to do
is disconnect the printer from the computer and roll back to
the most recent restore point. After rebooting, install the
HP software as directed and connect the printer when *it*
tells you to.

The reason for the rollback is that when you attached the
printer, Windows may have automatically installed some
things of its own to deal with it. If you don't undo those
things, there's a good chance the printer won't work.

This would be the case of a printer connected directly to the PC, either via
the Serial, Parallel or USB ports, but the OP specifically states a
"network" printer, which is normally connect to a router, switch or hub,
having its own IP address, which normally requires the printer be connected
to the network first then start the software install.

OP, since you state this is a network printer, make sure you have it
"connected to" and "properly configured" for your network before trying to
install. Once this is done, insert the CD into your computer's CD drive, it
should automatically start the setup process, unless of course, you've
turned off "autoplay" for your CD/DVD drive(s), which you'll need to open
the "Autorun.inf" file to see which "exe" file is to be run - notepad can
easily open this file. Once you know the executable (usually, setup.exe or
install.exe) go double-click on this file to start the install process.
Note, it running a software firewall, you'll need to configure the firewall
to make an exception for your printer's IP or DNS name, to allow two-way
traffic conversation between the two, otherwise the installation procedure
will not see the printer on the network, nor will it be available when you
are ready to scan, fax or print.

I am having the same problem that OP described. I just purchased a Linksys
print server to connect to my Netgear router to allow 2 laptops and a desktop
to share a printer. I used the CD that came with my Officejet 4215 to
install the drivers to each computer. The printer is connected to the print
server. I can get the computers to recognize the port for the print server.
However, when I try to add a printer using the Printer wizard, I am having
the same issues. The model is not listed in the setup screen. When I tell
the computer I have the CD for the printer driver, the computer cannot find
the file. Any help would be appreciated.
