HP-CD Hangs System

I have installed a HP CD-Writer 9100 with original discs on the pc and we
cannot play any CD without hanging the system. I am running 128mb ram on
AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor and have not had problems with previous
CD drive (my kid broke the gate and slide).
Internet search suggests reordering the CONFIG.SYS so that the driver
statement is in the first line plus a few other things, but the CONFIG.SYS
file appears empty when I go through system Information to edit it??? Should
this be empty? Any other solution available to the original problem? All help
appreciated.

CONFIG.SYS is not used by Windows 2000 for drivers.

Check your eventlog for any errors that might tip you off to the problem
Start-> Run -> eventvwr.msc
Look in the Application and System logs

If it is an error "reading" a CD-ROM, then you might have a DMA problem.
See this article on HP's site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?product=60019&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=lpg40610

You may also want to visit the manufacturers website for you motherboard /
disk controller and install the latest drivers they have for W2K.

If it's a "recording" problem, you might want to update your ASPI layer:
