cd rom block

Hi-HP Pavilion 530 J,
I'm using a Sony cd/rw rom as my simple cd rom. & am using the
original HP Lightscribe as the writer. All jumpers & connections are correct
and both drives seem to work just fine.
However, whenever I do a long install using the Sony (as I did tonight
with Encarta) I get dozens of errors in the event viewer, system, stating
there's a bad cd rom (or drive) block. I've checked all discs, used
compressed air to clean drive, etc.. Do I need a new cd-rom drive? Make
sense? Thanks-alan

I wouldn't run out and get a new drive just yet. Besides a physical problem
with the drive or disk, "bad block" can be due to copyright protection on
some software installation CDs or the drive may just be slow to spin for
reads.

If you notice problems installing software -errors related to copying or
reading files during installation or programs that don't run quite right on
first launch - try installing software from the other drive. Meanwhile,
keep an eye on the Sony for increased error frequency other than the bad
block message. If that happens, then consider a replacement.
