HP 722c printer making smeared and distorted copies

After upgrading from windows 98 se, I have been getting smeared print on my
HP deskjet 722c printer. The colors are also distorted. I saw in several
newsgroups (and through the advise of a person on another group) this
website http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm
I went to the website and followed the directions step by step. The
printer was still messed up. I thought maybe I had missed something, so I
did it again. Still nothing. So I deleted the printer and all drivers and
software, disconnected the printer cables, and uninstalled xp. Then I
reinstalled and then reinstalled and connected the printer. It is still
messed up. I thought maybe being connected through the scanner (Visioneer
5300, which is also not compatible with xp) was the problem, so I connected
the printer directly through the computer. Still nothing. I have also
changed the print cartridges, aligned the cartridges, and cleaned the heads.
After six hours
I'm still nowhere. Does anyone have any other ideas? I would really
appreciate your any help.

You said you upgraded to WInXP by chance before upgrading did you run the
verification wizard , if you would have you may have seen that the 722
requires the driver to be removed before upgrading
This printer uses Windows Xo resident drivers so you have the old driver
sticking in there
I would also check the bios of your PC put it on ecp epp, then try to load
thedriver
from XP

Keith, when I uninstalled XP I removed everything associated with HP before
reinstalling XP. I also unplugged and disconnected the printer before
installing xp. It didn't make any difference. How do I get to the bios so I
can try your suggestion?

I have the same printer. A couple of years ago when I upgraded to XP Pro
from ME I did not have to do anything to remove the printer. XP recognized
and installed it's driver and it's been workig with no problems since then.
Since you can do Services (align and clean) I assume the right printer
driver must be installed. Under Printer and Faxes HP Deskjet 722C Should
show up.
When you right click on 722C and do Properties, then Ports, is LPT1
checked?. If it is, go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager,
Ports (COM&LPT) and see if you get ECP Printer Port (LPT1). If it doesn't
show then you will have to enable it in BIOS. Not knowing your particular
computer, look through the manual or go to the manufacturer website to see
how you get into the BIOS.

We've tried and and also everything else we could find on the internet
through searches. We have come to the conclusion the printer itself is bad
and are going to buy a new one. We'll be sure it is compatible with XP.
Thanks for much for the help.
