howto stop Windows auto assign IP add

Each time I log onto my home LAN, just on this computer, windows
assigns some weird IP. I cannot get this to go away using ipconfig
/release. ipconfig /renew times out. This continues until I reset
the router, and then the Windows repair function works to renew the
local address. How can I disable autoconfiguration?

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is handy in most
Corporate/Enterprise environments but not really necessary on a
home network. Each time the PC boots, it receives it's configuration
from the Router. This operation takes time. All routers work on a
an IP Range 192.168.1.1 up to 192.168.1.254 (Varies, depending
on which brand router you have).
If you manually assign an IP Address, Gateway and DNS Server
your system will boot quicker and you'll always have the same IP
on that machine.
Read the documentation for your router to learn it's range. Then
modify your Local Area Connection parameters. Right Click the
LAC icon, Properties, TCP/IP and change the radio buttons from
Automatic to fixed values.

First enter a fixed/dedicated address such as 192.168.1.2, The
Gateway and DNS will always be the router's address (192.168.1.1).
The sub-net mask will be 255.255.255.0
Once this is done, DHCP will not attempt to assign parameters at
boot time.
