I'm having trouble updating a microsoft game (rise of legends) using the
auto-update feature within the game (it consistantly gets an error when
looking for a particular file to download). How do I contact microsoft in
order to get them to either check their download servers have the correct
file or to get help with updating? The links I tried ended up with the site
telling me that the product identification number I got from the game wasn't
right. Unfortunately it seems that there are a number of patches, none of
which are available directly from the internet, and I would like to play a
fully updated game (pretty much a requirement if i wanted to play online).

I have used previous versions of Microsoft flight Sim and now I am starting
all over with Vista.

I bought Microsoft Flight Simlator Deluxe Edition.
I bought Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration Expansion Pack.
I bought Saitek X52 Flight Control System.

I installed Flight Sim X only at this point and am flying with the keyboard
until I learn more about add ons and Service Packs.
Question. I see Microsoft has one or two Service Packs. What do I need? I
want to get the basic Flight Sim going properly before I add on any more
software.

Have you followed the instructions on how to run it without the auto
updater? Doesn't sound like it, and it really wasn't a major chore to
find...

http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/downloads.aspx#patch

If you have problems with the autopatcher: There will not be a standalone
..exe version of patch 4. If you encounter an error during patch installation
and need to run the patch again, you can manually execute the patch by
following these steps:
1.. Click the start button and select "Run".
2.. Type in "cmd" and press enter. This will bring up the command prompt
window. (For Win9x users, select the command prompt from the start menu)
3.. Type in "cd\" and then "cd X", where X is the location of the main
Rise of Nations folder on your system. (Eg. cd Program Files\Microsoft
Games\Rise of Nations)
4.. Once in the root folder for Rise of Nations, type "rise /patch
rn2.04.04.2903.rtp /p". The patch should then begin to install.
To verify the patch has installed: To check what version of the game that
you have, start Rise of Nations and select "Tools & Extras" from the main
menu. Then select "About Rise of Nations" and you should see the version
listed at the top of the window.

Thanks for the reply but the information you supplied is for the wrong game
(rise of nations, not as I am looking for, rise of legends), I have been
unable to find something similar for what I'm looking for.

Couldn't say for sure but usually service packs have updates that address
numerous features and are generally required for future updates. If you have
the time and the hard drive space I say you should probably always install
service packs.

Your right... Sorry! I searched for the right game, but apparently MS
brought that one up and I didn't catch the discrepancy. I'm pressed for
time at the moment, but will see if I can come up with anything a little
later on.

I just purchased the game today, and like you said, would rather play with a
fully patched verion, but I was getting the invalid patch error. It is not
uncommon. People have posted the patches on bit torrent sites, but I don't
trust them. I tried to email (e-mail address removed) as a desperate plea for
them to just release the patches on their site, but the email bounced (it was
an email link on their site?!)

From what I read on newsgroups, their pleas to Microsoft to just post the
patches have been totally ignored. I mean the game is 2 1/2 years old... I
think worrying about this game being pirated is a little lame, especially
since it is sitting in discount bins.

Well, now I am getting "Unable to Establish Communication with Patch Server"
errors... very frustrating.

I am running it on Vista Ultimate x64, and the game plays great, but the
latest patch is suppose to address some Vista issues. I have also tried
installing it on a Windows XP install, but am getting the exact same Invalid
Patch or now, Unable to See the Darn Patch Server (not the actual error
message, but you get my drift)

Same problem AS many people are having It downloads about 120 megs of an
update then it Crashes with an error. God why don't they have the patch as a
stand-alone file? Sigh.

I'm having the exact same problem and the microsoft support sites will only
help me if I pay; fat chance! Anyways to those to read this the problem is
stated in two windows whilst downloading the updates for Rise of Nations:
Rise of Legends.

window one: (occures 8 out of 11 files)
Invalid patch: RETAIL -0608.0901.002-0610.1601.0000.RTP

Window two: (right after window one)
Unable to establish connection to the patch server(s)

Even with the Hamachi Networking program (www.hamachi.net) my friends and I
still can't find eachother's games. At first I thought it had to do with the
fact I baught this game while Target was having a clearence sale on it, but
this discussion group proved otherwise. I looked through every option in the
game, but there was no way to input IP addresses. At this rate I'm gona lug
my computer around to my friends houses just to prove who's better at Alin,
Coutl, and Vinchi. If that dosen't work then I'm gona see if i can sue em.
After all it's false advertising to say their product does one thing and it
can't; ever heard what happened to Madam Cleo?

This error (probably) means the patcher is looking for a file, and it's
finding the wrong file.

Either the patch didn't download correctly (errors, unlikely) or you're
trying to patch the game and your game files on your HD have changed or
are modified in some way (more likely).

Assuming you have a retail CD/DVD for the game, you might try
uninstalling (then make sure the program files are removed from your
program files folder and backup your save folder), then re-install from
the CD/DVD and once re-installed right-click on the game icon and choose
"run as admin" the first time you startup the game. See if the auto-
patcher gets everything this time around, if the game has to restart to
patch, let the patcher run then when it's done it might startup the game
again without Admin privledges. If so, quit the game then run as admin
again before checking for updates again.

Repeat until it says no more updates.

If you patched your game with a third party patch, like a No-CD patch
this would cause the patcher to freak out because the way .RTP files
work, is they basically look at the old file and use parts of the new
files to mutate the old file into the new file. Unfortunatly if you
changed the old files in any way the patcher can't mutate the old file
into the new file because the old file doesn't exist or is wrong.

Basically patches can be only like 3-4 megs and effectively patch
hundreds of megs of files into new files. Pretty smart, been doing it
since the 386 days.
Window two: (right after window one)
Unable to establish connection to the patch server(s)

Your game is probably trying to re-download the patch and is failing.
Dunno. If you get the patch to work correctly this problem should go
away. As I said before if the game patchs, and restarts the game
automatically, then quit out, right-click and run as admin again. Make
sure your game is always running "Elevated", or in Admin mode. Once it's
fully patched you shouldn't need to do that.

If all that fails, ya gotta find the patches, download them seperately
and run them as admin from your desktop.

Another simple solution might be to disable UAC before starting the game
(no need to run as admin, you'll always be in admin state). Bring up the
User Accounts control panel, there's a checkbox in there to disable user
account control.
At this rate I'm gona lug my computer around to my
friends houses just to prove who's better at Alin, Coutl, and Vinchi.

Yeah, good luck with that. If you check the box there are disclaimers
everywhere, you should read small print before you go buying software.
It's a laff riot.

Old game, new problems, hope you all get it goin, I seem to recall that
being a pretty fun game.

It's no C&C red alert, but it's cool.

Oops, I apologize for the Vista post, if you're on Windows XP my apologizes
about the Run As Admin stuff, but still, most of what I stated before about
reinstalling still applies.
