How to use 2003 Clip Art gallery?

I found the clip gallery on Powerpoint 98 very easy and fast to use. It was
slightly less easy on Office 2000 but I got used to it quickly enough, but
now I've upgraded to 2003 I haven't got a clue how to scroll quickly through
all the clips looking for the one I want. There are not enough displayed in
the dreaded Task Pane and they appear very slowly and many such as Screen
Beans seem to have disappeared. Does anybody know how to keep the good new
features of Powerpoint but revert the tools such as clip gallery and custom
animation back to the easier , more intuitive, Office 2000 method

Hi John,

I think one of the reasons it loads slowly, is that some of the content can
be on the internet. I think Microsoft assume everyone in the world has a
connection as fast as they do in the US, which is not the case. Under the
"Search in" area, see if the bit about "Web Collections" is enabled. That
may be slowing it down. Again, I guess it works well where you have a
brilliant internet connect, and it is not blocked by corporate group policy.

Note: Choose Help, Customer Feedback Options (intuitive, that)
Click Online Content
Disable various bits as needed to make it stop searching for clip art on the
net.

Note II: REMEMBER that you've done this. Depending on what you disable, Help,
Check For Updates will stop functioning.

You have to quit and restart PPT for changes here to take effect.

Glen,
Thanks for your post. I tried disabling "Web Collections" it was marginally
faster but not fast enough, the thumbnails don't load as fast as the scoll
bar can run down the page so when I click and hold the scroll buttons all I
see is empty boxes with a cross in the centre. This didn't use to happen on
2000. Also most of the clips that I use regularly have disappeared, any idea
where they might have gone to?

Steve,
Thanks, but I don't have a Customer Feedback Option under Help. Could this
have been diabled by a Corporate Policy?

John,

If the clip is on the internet and not downloaded, you get a little globe
icon on the bottom corner of the preview.

And yes, I am getting the same experience. Maybe try this. Click the
"organise clips". Then when the box drops up, go File| Add clips to
organiser, and maybe Automatically. That should load any clips on your hard
drive in. Does that help?

You also have the option to make certain online clips available offline via
the bottom beside the icon.

Glen,
It hasn't speeded up the display of the thumbnails. The new system is ok if
you know the keywords for the clips that you want, but I frequently just scan
throught the whole collection looking for inspiration and I can't do that
anymore. Will I have to go back to Office 2000?

It's possible. I don't know much about how policy settings can affect Office.
Might want to check with IT on that one.

John,

If you ignore the Task Pane and go into the actual clip organiser. You can
search there. Is it any faster? I wonder if it is something with the Task
Pane?

Now here is something interesting.

When you select the "Search In" area, and say, go for web collection, you
can select it twice. That is one click selects Office Online, but none of
the sub categories. If you click to select again, you select all of the sub
categories, and the icon changes to look like multiple folders. doesn't help
you but I am learning heaps <g>.

Glen,
Many thanks, that's nearly as good as it used to be. Now all I need to find
is a way to go directly to the Clip Organiser bypassing the Task Pane and
Powerpoint will be usable again.

John,

You will find the program in something like:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11

And it is called Mstore.exe. You could set it up to run off the task bar as
a separate program. The only difficulty is that the Clip Organiser only
allows you to copy a clip. You then need to go tot he Office Application and
paste it. In the Task Pane, you can paste it straight in with a drop down
arrow. Seems to em it wasn't broke and someone tried to fix it.

Glen,
Many thanks for that. Life is much easier now. You can drag & drop from the
organiser, which make life easy and the organiser stays open so you can get
another image easily.

The Web Collections worked one time only, and then was blocked leaving no
error message. The loading of clip art was slow for me as well, and the
eternal scrolling through tiny thumbnails, lacked the visual quality of Clip
Art Gallery 5.0 Wish I had advise to offer, but just wanted to state I had
the same experience with the Organizer, and am going back to the more
user-friendly gallery.
