How to uninstall old Windows Media Player

I just installed Windows Media Player 9, but when I try to listen to a radio
station, an older version, 6.0, keeps popping up and trying to run...and for
some reason it gets an error message and doesn't even work. I want to get
rid of version 6 but can't find it in Control Panel uninstall/install
software. The wmplayer.exe in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player is
from 2002. Windows Media Player v.6 is dated 1999, so that must be the v.9
I just installed. I've searched the entire hard drive for wmplayer.exe
and only find the 2002 version. Can someone suggest how I would go about
finding this stealth version 6 and getting rid of it.

It's located in the same folder where you found version 9. The file is called
mplayer2.exe. I'd suggest leaving it alone, simply correct the file association
of the audio file that you want WMP9 to play by default.

In order to correct the file association, open WMP9, click on Tools > Options >
File Types tab. Check the type of audio file that you want WMP9 to play, then
click on the Apply & OK buttons.

I checked the file associations, and they were all checked, but I went ahead
and clicked on select all...after that Windows Media 9 is coming up instead
of v.6, but I still can't get the radio station to play. I tried listening
to something from the station archives, and when I clicked on the Windows
Media choice this error message came up: "class not registered".

I recently had a registry problem on this computer, and had to bring back
the original SOFTWARE file from the /Repair folder. Perhaps this has
something to do with this problem...but I also reinstalled Win2000 sp4 after
I did the original SOFTWARE file registry file switch. Any thoughts on
this?

You say that you reinstalled Win2K and I'm assuming it wasn't a clean install
but rather a repair install. If so, the registry probably wasn't restored to the
state that you anticipated.

At this point, I would try uninstalling WMP9, restarting the system and then
reinstalling WMP9. Then see what happens. If still no joy, you would be better
served by posting your problem on the microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
newsgroup for expert advice.

Some notes on registry backups:

A more thorough method of registry backup and restoration can be accomplished
with this freeware utility:

ERUNT
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

The latest version of this utility has an autobackup feature or one can use it
with the Task Scheduler. Backups can easily be restored from within Windows or
the Recovery Console. I have mine setup to do a daily backup using the Task
Scheduler.

I've rarely had to use it for recovery purposes..but it gives one a warm feeling
just having this option available.

If used, be sure to store your backup(s) in a subfolder of the %SystemRoot%
folder so that it's accessible when you're in the Recovery Console mode.

Good luck!

P.S.(OT) I also noticed that you're running IE 5.5. This version is no longer
kept up-to-date to counter security issues. It would be wise to install IE 6 SP1
and then visit the Windows Update site to obtain all the latest patches.
