How To Turn Off Services?

M

Metrov

"Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many
operating systems install auxiliary
services that are not critical, such as an FTP server,
telnet, and a Web server. These services
are avenues of attack. If they are removed, blended
threats have less avenues of attack and you
have fewer services to maintain through patch updates."

The above is posted on symantec.com re: protecting against
certain worms and virues. However they don't explain how
to do it. And I've searched everywhere in the winXP Help
and Support section, and can find nothing.

Can someone please tell me how to turn off services I
don't need. And would this be the same place where I'd
remove items from the startup menu? Because on win98, it
was easy enough to remove items from the startup menu, but
on XP, it's become much more confusing and complicated;
perhaps not even possible? How do I remove unnecessary,
CUP draining items from the startup menu?

Thanks very much, and please send a copy of your reponse
to my email address because I don't seem to get
notification from this board, and I can never find my
question again. (e-mail address removed)

Hi Metrov,

Start/Admin Tools/Services/Stop

To Delete a Service

In Services take note of the "Service Name" (not display name). Then go to
Start/Run/CMD and type in: sc delete <service name>. Reboot.

Or go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Locate the Service in the list. Delete it... reboot.
