On my computer, I get a dialog captioned "Turn off computer" with three
icons: (i) Stand By; (ii) Turn Off; and (iii) Restart

My son, instead, gets a combobox with four items: 'Logoff, shutdown,
restart, standby'.

We'd like to know who to get his computer to work like mine, because I can
invoke the hibernate function by pressing the space-bar while the dialog has
focus and get the "Stand By" converted to "Hibernate".

Pressing the space-bar does nothing to the combobox on my son's computer.

My Control Panel | System | General says:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

My son is also running XP Pro with current service packs, though I don't
have more precise data at the moment.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Richard

Do you have hibernation enabled?

Hi Edwin

Thanks for your response.
Do you have hibernation enabled?

I do, but I'll double check with my son. I sent him a memo on setting up
for hibernation, but I didn't check that he followed up on the details.

Again, thanks for reminding me.

Richard

Hi Wes,

It certainly *did* help. That link included the following:

===========
After you click Turn off computer on the Start menu, you may only see the
following buttons even though you have enabled hibernation:
Stand by, Turn Off, Restart
Note: Computers that are on a domain that are using the classic Shut Down
menu, do not have these buttons.
===========

The last sentence is significant to our case. I'm running a stand-alone
machine. My son's no doubt running on a domain. Is there no way for a
domain user to establish this aspect of a stand-alone machine's behavior
without violating the integrity of his domain connection? Through a
Registry entry perhaps?

Again, thanks for responding to my questions.

Regards,
Richard

Richard,

I just now found an updated version of the KB article.

See the following...

[[Note If your computer is on a domain and if your computer uses the classic
Shut Down menu, you must follow these steps to cause the Hibernate button to
appear:]]

here...

When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or in Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;893056

But, the hot fix is needed.

Wes,
I just now found an updated version of the KB article.
[[Note If your computer is on a domain ...

That looks just like what the doctor ordered. Great hunting! I've never
had much success search the KB for solutions. Googling, on the other hand,
has been great for me.
When you click “Turn Off Computer” on the Start menu, the Hibernate button
does not appear in Windows XP Service Pack 2 ...
But, the hot fix is needed.

But that seems wrong to me, unless the hotfix has been included in the
standard WindowsUpdate stuff. I'm running WinXP-Pro/SP2 (Control Panel |
System confirms that) and a ToolTip came up when I hovered over the "Turn
Off Computer" button. That ToolTip told me that I had a hibernate option.
When I couldn't find it in the "Turn off computer" dialog, I hovered over
the icons displayed there and got instructions from the "StandBy" tooltip
that I had to hold down the Shift key when clicking to initiate hibernation.
That worksed for me.

Hopefully, the new KB article will work for my son on a domain.

Thank you very much for following up on this question.

Best wishes,
Richard

Richard,

There is an additional Hotfix above and beyond SP2 that is mentioned in the
KB article.

If you Google with the right keyword(s), Google will find MSKB articles.
Sometimes even better than MS. ;-)

Keep having fun! :)

Hi Wes,
There is an additional Hotfix above and beyond SP2 that is mentioned in
the
KB article.

I understood that. I criticized the article because it suggested that one
*must* apply the hotfix to an XP/SP system to get the hibernate
functionality. My system offers a counter-example. I hibernate daily
without ever, to my knowledge, having applied the hotfix to my sustem ...
and I'm the only one with access to that system. The only caveat is that
the hotfix might have been included unbeknownst to me in one of the security
patches from WindowsUpdate, which I apply whenever offered.

I only mention this in case KB is in fact in error on this point and someone
thinks it's worthwhile to correct it. You're much better connected to
Microsoft than I am, so I just want to let you know. And that's the end of
the matter on my part.

My son (on the domain-connected computer) was *very* appreciative of your
guidance on this. It made me look like a "sleuth." :)
If you Google with the right keyword(s), Google will find MSKB articles.

I'll make more of an effort to that. Thanks for the encouragement.
Keep having fun! :)

In response to that injunction, I have this to offer to your coulors
example, even if you do use an archaic spelling for it :). I prepended
the following six lines before the body list in coulors.html:

<h3 class="red">#ff0000</h3>
<h3 class="green">#00ff00</h3>
<h3 class="blue">#0000ff</h3>
<h3 class="red-text">red</h3>
<h3 class="green-text">green</h3>
<h3 class="blue-text">blue</h3>

Added the corresponding things to .css:

h3.red { background-color:#ff0000 }
h3.green { background-color:#00ff00 }
h3.blue { background-color:#0000ff }
h3.red-text { background-color:red }
h3.green-text { background-color:green }
h3.blue-text { background-color:blue }

Also, I prepended "#" to all the hex code. All in all, that was indeed
fun. I'm mailing those two files to my 13-yo grandson whose proficient in
MSWord and IM. I'm hoping it may tempt him to learn some HTML.

Again, best wishes,
Richard in the U.S. :)

I have submitted a couple of these for MSKB articles and haven't seen or

With the pull I have with Microsoft, why, I can go to any store and purchase
any Microsoft product that I want.

If you're in the US, why are you misspelling colour the English/Canadian
way?

I had a friend in college in Iowa who was from Canada. He had to take a
remedial English class because of his spelling. <LOL>

Wes,

Have always heard that MVPs get
free software, free rides on Microsoft
jets, free seminars, and are on a first-name
basis with Bill and Melinda Gates.

You mean this isn't the case?

Noted! I'd never bothered to scroll to the bottom of a KB page heretofore.
I have submitted a couple of these for MSKB articles and haven't seen or

If *your* suggestions haven't merited even a "Thank You" from Bill's shop,
there's no point in me filling up their InBox. I'll just keep my "two
cents" to myself.
With the pull I have with Microsoft, why, I can go to any store and

That's a bummer. I think you MSVPs do a wonderful service to users and
developers on the Windows platform. Without you folks I, for one, would
have switched to Open Source on Linux almost completely. And if a
substantial number of software developers joined me in that sentiment, MS'
dominance would fade rapidly IMHO.
If you're in the US, why are you misspelling colour the English/Canadian
way?

I am definitely in the U.S. I wrote "coulor" accidentally. I meant to
write it your way. But when I sent a cut down version, actually my six-line
version, to my grandson I labeled the file "color.xxx".
I had a friend in college in Iowa who was from Canada. He had to take a
remedial English class because of his spelling. <LOL>

That's a shame :-( But even if he was spelling-challenged, from a U.S.
perspective, he no doubt was very proud when his P.M. addressed a U.S.
audience extolled Canada's virtues contrasted against our ills. It was
broadcast on CSPAN: very impressive.

Cheers,
Richard

Since Bill has been lending me one of the Microsoft jets I have sold my
pickup. I have had to build a longer driveway and a bigger garage. :-D

Richard, I was being facetious, I do that a lot. ;-)

[[Q6: Do Microsoft MVPs receive any payment from Microsoft?

A6: No. The Microsoft MVP Program does provide a small award of software and
other benefits in its core program offering, but MVPs do not receive any
monetary payment from the Microsoft MVP Program.]]

No problem. I share your sense of humor, and I make no apologies for it!!

I think we've beaten this topic to death, so I'm signing off. I hope to
see you online again as my next "brain failure" occurs.
