How to turn off services?

"Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many
operating systems install auxiliary services that are not
critical, such as an FTP server, telnet, and a Web server.
These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed,
blended threats have less avenues of attack and you have
fewer services to maintain through patch updates."

The above is posted on symantec.com re: protecting against
certain worms and virues. However they don't explain how
to do it. And I've searched everywhere in the winXP Help
and Support section, and can find nothing.

Can someone please tell me how to turn off services I
don't need. And would this be the same place where I'd
remove items from the startup menu? Because on win98, it
was easy enough to remove items from the startup menu, but
on XP, it's become much more confusing and complicated;
perhaps not even possible?

Thanks very much, and please send a copy of your reponse
to my email address.

Best wishes, Metrov

Suggest you read in Help about Services first. Then, you should make up
your *own* mind about what are needed and or not needed. (for example
you will probably find that the services mentioned by Symantec are not
running on your system ... but you need to discover that for yourself on
your system ... it's not Symantec's).

There are various ways to manage Services (which you will learn about in
Help), but see the Control Panel Application called "Services". Please
make sure that by stopping these services that you are indeed fixing
something which is broken. If you stop needed services, then your
computer will stop working.

If your issue is to improve your security, follow the basic guidance as
advocated by many including Microsoft (see
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp)

1. Use an internet firewall
2. get computer updates
3. use up-to-date anti-virus software

.
Start/Run/type services.msc and click Enter. This will
open a window showing all programs/services that are
running. Click any of the services to turn them off.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt/type "services.msc" at the
flashing Cursor and press rhe Keyboard Enter Key. A list of Services will be
reflected in the window which opens. To change any, right
click it and click "Properties" on the Drop Down Menu. You have three
options: Automatic, Manuel, or Disable.
DO NOT change anything until you know more. Go to:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm and you will get a bunch of
information, help, advice, etc, about XP Services.
