Turning off Indexing Service and clearing Indexing Service files

I'm trying to set up a really stripped Windows XP install and I want to turn
off Indexing Service and clear any residual index files. To that end:

1. How should I turn off the indexing Service? Would directly disabling the
Indexing Service in the services list amount to the same thing as stopping
Indexing Service under Services and Applications? To clean things up as much
as possible, should I do one or the other or both?

2. When I've turned off the Indexing Service, will there still be leftover
index files, or are they automatically deleted? If they will still be there,
how should I clear them?

3. A related question: when you uncheck "Allow Indexing Service..." in MS
Explorer, does that delete entries from some index file or just change a flag
for a given folder (or all subfolders and files, if you choose that) so that
folder won't be indexed thereafter?

Thanks,
Drew
