When I open folders in windows explorer I see menus on the left side:

Picture Tasks
File and Folder Tasks
Other Places
Details

How do I turn these off, I would prefer not to see them.
Windows help says to change this in Themes and Appearances, but I can't get
it to change.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated!

Open any folder and click on Tools at the top of the window.
In the menu that drops down, click on Folder Options.
In the Tasks section on the General page, select "Use Windows
classic folders".
Click OK.

FYI, the help article you cite assumes you have Control Panel
configured for Category view in the left hand column.

Good luck

Click on "Folders" on the Standard Buttons Toolbar

Toggles the view on/off.
