file and folder task appears on my window

I used to double-click a folder icon present on my desktop, and see
the foler's window open up all in one panel.

The same happens now, except the screen is kind of subdivided,
with teh left side saying File and Folder Task (can be expanded or collapsed)
and under that Other Places(that too can be expanded or collapsed)
and finally Details(again, it can be expanded or collapsed).

To the right its the same usual panel with the files etc.

My question is how did the stacked panels on the left starting appearing
there,
and how do I turn that off?

There's a folder icon (button) on the toolbar, click on that and folders will
show on the left. If you don't see the folder icon (and other icons) right
click on the menu bar and choose standard buttons.

Yes, there is a Folders icon on the toolbar, once I click it I see the folders
and their directory structure. If I close this little panel/window by clicking
on its x, then it takes me back to the File and Folder Task, etc.

I want to close it, AND NOTHING TO SHOW in its place

I see.

Do this then:

Click Tools Menu > Folder Options > General tab > Under Task > Tick Use
Windows classic folders

You are absolutely right, this is exactly what I checked and did
about an hour after my previous post, thats how I had it before, ie in
classic view,
but somehow I must have clicked the wrong bullet and had this problem...

In anycase, its fixed now, many thanks Rey, I appreciate it.
