How to set up a new collection then export selected clips to it

You can start of new collection database by deleting the current file.. see
the Managing > Collections page of my website for info about the file's name
and location.

But you can't export selected clips to populate the new one.... the only way
into the collection database is by importing source files using MM2.

Well either I am reading your question wrong or Papajohn is so let's find
out. :)
With Movie Maker open click the "Collections" button to view your current
collections.
The left pane will show your collections. Right click on "Collections" and
select "New Collection".
This will create a new collection which you can name whatever you like.
Now you can click on any of the other collections and drag the clips you
want over to the newly created one.
I hope that helps.

Well thanks to both of you.
Both of you have helped me before and I appreciate it.

OK, I'm in trouble again.

I created the new one and it shows up in the left pane and also at the top
to the right of the "Collections" Folder box (the first one in the
drop-down list of collections.).

I've tried to drag a clip to both places and it looks like it doesn't take
it - it doesn't show up in the box labeled "Name, duration, start
time......"

What am I doing wrong??

Doug Mc

I just noticed. I'm in trouble twice!!
I worked all day cleaning up a bunch of clips in a collection, clicking
"Save Project" each time.
I finished the last clip and did a Save Project and stopped for Dinner.
(I exited out of MM)

After dinner I came back and opened MM and I couldn't see ANY of my work!
I still had the original entries in the collection box - this showed the
clips that I had saved from the looooooooooooong tape that I had captured.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL MY WORK????????????

D

Doug Mc

NEVER MIND. I WAS DUMB AGAIN!

I looked in File/Open and clicked on the Project and THERE IT IS. Thank
The Lord!!

Your collection should show up in both spots just as it is doing.
The one you want to drag to is the one in the left pane.
As far as the issue now I am not quite clear on what is happening.
Are you dragging the clip from one collection to another? This is what you
should be doing.
I also am not sure of what you are referring to by "Name, duration, start
time....."
Please clarify if you haven't already figured it out for yourself.

Hi Wojo,
I'm back. Been pretty busy.

I tried dragging it to both "panes."
But, I've not been dragging it from the Collection list, but from the
Storyboard. That's where I've got them cleaned up. If I take them from the
Collection again they'll need "cleaning up" again......
So, are we saying I can't pick them out from the Storyboard??

FYI: I was talking about the Collection pane (on the right) when I mentioned
Name, duration.......etc.

Thanks,
I'll be watching for your response.

Doug Mc

Well, I'm sorry to hear that but thanks anyway.
I'll try to get by with what I've got.

Lots of thanks to you and to Wojo.
You've been a big help.
(Stay close by - I'm sure I'll be bugging you again soon!)

Well, it didn't take me long to get back, did it?

Can I convert the stuff in the storyboard back to an AVI file? If so, I
could at least call that another collection and go by through and split the
clips that I've cleaned up. (I think I told you that this originated from
one of four tapes that I have some old movies on.....so the other three will
take a lot of editing also. Each of the four tapes is almost an hour in
length!)

What do you think??

Project files (.MSWMM) exist totally independent of the collection info that
is contained in the collection database (MediaTab.dat file)... and the only
way to get info into the collection database is to import source files and
split/name/organize them in the collection area....

Once they are copied from the collection to the project storyboard/timeline,
the copy starts off with some of the properties of the one in the
collection, but it's totally separate from it.... delete the one in the
collection and it doesn't get removed from the project... delete it from
the project and it doesn't effect the collection....

I guess we wrote and posted about the same time... I was finishing my
thoughts on the last topic as you started this one.

And I've been trying hard to relax from emails and posts as I head into some
vacationing.... you're in good hands with Wojo and others.

In a nutshell, yes, you can do what you want.... that's how you loop around
the one way street to start down it again.

Thanks for the compliment Papajohn.
As to Doug papajohn's correct. Clean up the clips however you want and then
save them to your harddrive (not by saving the project but by clicking "Save
to my computer" under the FINISH MOVIE task.
Then import the new clip into your collections and from there you can drag
it to whichever collection you want.
