How to Reset Chapter Headings in Page #'s?

I have a 1000+ page report comprised of 11 chapters. I want to have each
chapter to be a separate document, and the first heading in each document to
start at 1.

How can I add page numbering to each document so that it starts with the
chapter number (e.g., for Ch1, 1-1; for Ch2, 2-1)?

I have tried including the Chapter Number but (obviously) since it is based
on Heading styles and each chapter starts with heading 1, every document
looks like it is chapter 1!

Any suggestions, greatly appreciated. TIA...klam

Thx a mint Jay...I didn't intend to use the Chapter-page-numbering to replace
pages in the doc, but after reading the intro to that piece you suggested, I
changed my mind anyway!

I've decided to put the Chapter # and Title in the footer in text. It will
make my footer one line longer but it will also make our readers aware that
there are many more components to the report--the initial objective of using
chapters #'ing in the page #s.

cheers,
