How to repair "My Computer"

If I try and open "My computer" the window opens but it's blank and if I
mouse over it I get an hour glass. Otherwise I can explore my hard drive OK
(eg My Documents via a desktop shortcut works ok).

I'm not 100% convinced this is related but in the system event log I
have....

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7009
Date: 25/02/2005
Time: 14:52:42
User: N/A
Computer: MERCURY
Description:
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the PDEngine service to connect.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Any ideas?

It started when I was using MS Money. I tried to backup to a flash drive.
This worked once but the second time I tried it crashed while trying to
compress the backup file. To me it sounds like Win Explorer is trying to
access the flash drive or ?? when i open My Computer and that's failing.

Answering my own question for the benefit of others.....

It seems the above error may have been caused by a time expired trial copy
of PerfectDisk (of which the PDEngine appears to be part). After I
uninstalled PerfectDisk My Computer started to behave normally.

I take it back. The problem returned after another reboot. It seems the
PerfectDisk error in the log wasn't related to the problem with "My
Computer".

Ok now I'm getting somewhere...
It started when I was using MS Money.

It seems to matter if I have my Flash card in the drive at boot up. It seems
MSMoney corrupted the card in some way as I can't explore it in any way
without it hanging explorer. I can't get to the format menu by right
clicking on the drive so I'll reformat it in my camera and see how that
goes.

With regard to your 7009 error have you read this Article:
Remote Directory Lists Are Slower Than Local Directory Listings
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;177266&sd=ee

Found this comment interesting:

"This error is not directly generated by the application experiencing
the problem but by the Service Control Manager that cannot connect to
the service (due to problems with that application). Look for error
messages generated by the application itself. "

Are you sure the 7009 error relates to your My Computer error? Are there
any DCOM errors? What changes have you made to printers, scanners,
cameras etc immediately prior to the first error?

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I eventually discovered it wasn't related so I had two problems.
Both now solved....

1) The 7009 error was caused by the time expired trial copy of PerfectDisk
defragmenter application. Cured that error by uninstalling it.

2) The "My Computer" problem was caused by a corrupt compact flash card.
Reformatting the card fixed the problem.

All ok now!
